APG2015 Day 5: Vietnam makes top three with 39 gold medals

Vietnam jumped to third place in the provisional standings of the 8th ASEAN Para Games (APG2015) in Singapore with an additional 11 gold medals won in athletics, powerlifting and swimming on December 7.

Vu Thi Kim Thuy secured Vietnam’s first gold of the day as she finished first in the women’s long jump F11/12 event with a final distance of 4.22m.

The athletics team also brought home two more gold medals for Vietnam thanks to Nguyen Hoang Minh in the men’s 800m T11/12 (2:04.66) and Le Van Manh in the men’s 400m T37 (57.45 seconds).

Powerlifters added two golds to Vietnam’s tally with Dang Thi Linh Phuong winning the women’s up to 50kg category and Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan dominating the women’s up to 55kg with the best lifts of 93kg and 100kg respectively.

Swimming earned the most gold medals for Vietnam today with six golds won by Trinh Thi Bich Nhu in the women’s 50m freestyle S6 (40.60 seconds), Vo Thanh Tung in the men’s 50m freestyle S5 (34.90 seconds), Le Tien Dat in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 (33.74 seconds), Vo Huynh Anh Khoa in the men’s 50m freestyle S9 (28.08 seconds), Pham Anh Tu in the men’s 50m freestyle S11 (30.42 seconds) and Tran Quoc Phi in the men’s 50m freestyle S12 (27.76 seconds).

Three Para Games records were broken by Vietnamese athletes on Monday, thanks to powerlifter Dang Thi Linh Phuong in the women’s up to 50kg category (93kg), swimmer Trinh Thi Bich Nhu in the women’s 50m freestyle S6 (40.60 seconds) and swimmer Le Tien Dat in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 (33.74 seconds).

In addition, Vietnam won another 15 silver and 10 bronze medals the same day.

As of 9pm today, Vietnam had won a total of 39 gold, 45 silver and 38 bronze medals, behind Thailand with 59 golds and Indonesia with 58 golds.
