According to head coach Huynh Huu Chi, on the team’s last day of competition day last Sunday, Vietnamese weightlifters won another five gold medals, thanks to a gold from female weightlifter Tuyet Mai in the 63kg category, Nguyen Thi Van’s three golds in the 69kg category and Nguyen Quang Truong with two golds. Truong also won two silver medals that day.
Earlier, the team had won twelve gold medals in the first two days of competition. Particularly, in the women’s youth 44kg weight class, Khong My Phuong won three gold medals in snatch with 68kg, clean and jerk with 80kg and total weight of 148kg.
In men’s youth 50kg, Le Nguyen Quoc Bao also won three gold medals in snatch (86kg), clean and jerk (117kg) and total weight (203kg). In the 56kg weight class (for 17-year-olds), Ly Quang Vinh also won three gold medals in all three events: snatch (112kg), clean and jerk (130kg) and total weight (242kg).
In women’s junior 48kg, Ngo Thi Quyen won one gold in snatch event with 82kg and two silvers in clean and jerk (98kg) and total weight (180kg). Tran Thi My Dung in the 53kg bodyweight category also won two gold medals in the snatch and total weight events, plus a bronze in clean and jerk.
The first two days of the event saw competitions in the light bodyweight categories, which were areas of Vietnam’s strength. The team with Ho Chi Minh City athletes at its core competed successfully, winning twelve golds, of which the Southern hub’s natives contributed the most with eleven gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
On the first day of their competition on November 11, six Vietnamese weightlifters won ten gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
The eighteenth edition of the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships is being held at the Otaku City Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan from November 8-16, attracting the participation of over 220 weightlifters from 23 countries and territories in Asia.
