SEA Games: Vietnam wins 16th gold medal in track and field

The track and field team brought home two additional gold medals for Vietnam on August 26, thanks to the success of Tran Thi Yen Hoa and Nguyen Van Lai.

Yen Hoa secured Vietnam’s first title of the day by winning the women’s 100m hurdles event, with a time of 13.4 seconds.

Lai turned the men’s 5,000m distance into a single-horse race as he left the other competitors trailing in his wake and comfortably finished the contest in 14:55.15.

The 29th SEA Games is the most successful Games edition for Vietnamese track and field athletes, as they have so far won 16 gold medals in Kuala Lumpur.

Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim and Lien Thi Tuyet Mai picked up the first gold medal for the Vietnamese taekwondo team in this year’s SEA Games, after taking the top honour in the women’s team poomsae discipline with 8.43 points.

The next two places went to Thailand and the Philippines with 8.27 and 8.37 points, respectively.

Alongside the three gold medals, Vietnamese athletes also brought home one silver (shooting) and two bronze medals (taekwondo) this afternoon.

As of 5.30pm today, Vietnam stood firmly in second place in the provisional medal standings with 47 gold medals.
