Inspired by the victory of female teammate Pham Thi Tuoi, in the women’s 45-50kg category earlier in the morning, Tien and Tri managed to beat their Singaporean opponents with the same score line of 5-0, thereby adding two more golds to Vietnam’s SEA Games medal tally.
In the remaining four Pencak Silat final clashes, the Vietnamese competitors, namely Nguyen Thai Linh, Pham Tuan Anh, Tran Dinh Nam and Le Si Kien, did not manage to bring home the fourth title in the sport for Vietnam, having to settle for silver medals in the men’s 60kg, 70kg, 75kg and 85kg weight classes, respectively.
Taekwondo artist Nguyen Van Duy failed to defend his under-63kg title after succumbing to a defeat at an Indonesian fighter.
Weightlifter Nguyen Hong Ngoc secured Vietnam another silver medal with a total lift of 307kg in the men’s 77kg competition, 18kg fewer than the Indonesia champion, Iketut Ariana.
As of 5pm today, Vietnam retained third place on the medal table with 58 golds, behind Malaysia with 133 golds and Thailand with 63 golds.
