Football: Salah voted England's Footballer of the Year

Liverpool's Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah has been voted Player of the Year by the Football Writers' Association (FWA) to complete the double of English soccer's major individual awards. Salah was chosen as player of the year by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) after an outstanding season in which he has scored 43 goals in all competitions. The 25-year-old is the first African player to win the FWA award which began in 1948.

* Roberto Mancini is willing to become the next Italy manager but no deal has yet been reached and discussions with the Italian soccer federation (FIGC) will continue later this month, a federation official was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

* Law professor Steve Cornelius, a South African legal expert, has resigned from the IAAF's disciplinary tribunal in protest at a new hyperandrogenism rule that could result in bans for some female athletes unless they undergo testosterone-reducing treatment.

* Leicester City midfielder Marc Albrighton has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for his conduct towards the referee after being sent off in last Saturday's 5-0 Premier League defeat by Crystal Palace. Albrighton was shown a straight red card in the second half at Selhurst Park after a poor challenge on Palace winger Wilfried Zaha. Following his dismissal, the 28-year-old appeared to direct abusive language towards referee Mike Dean.

* Wimbledon on Tuesday announced it was hiking its total prize pot for the 2018 tennis championships to £34 million, up 7.6% from last year.

* FIFA will advance US$2 million in prize money to each of the five African teams that have qualified for the World Cup to help them prepare for the tournament, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said. The team include Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia.

* Formula One has approved aerodynamic rule changes for 2019 aimed at promoting closer racing by making it easier for cars to overtake, the sport's governing body said on Tuesday. The measures include a simplified front wing with a larger span, front brake ducts without winglets and a wider and deeper rear wing.

* Rome is on red alert with 3,000 police officers deployed to avoid ugly scenes during Roma's Champions League return leg match against Liverpool at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.
