Spain's La Liga says ready to turn to EU over City and PSG cases

The Spanish soccer league’s organising body La Liga is ready to turn to the European Union if UEFA does not enforce its Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules against Manchester City and Paris St Germain, La Liga spokesman Joris Evers told Reuters on Tuesday.

‘Football Leaks’ documents, showing the two clubs had inflated sponsorship revenues to meet the requirements, were obtained by the German publication Der Spiegel and reviewed by Reuters in partnership with European Investigative Collaborations, a consortium of international media. The FFP rules are intended, among other things, to prevent clubs receiving unlimited amounts of money through inflated sponsorship deals with organisations related to the owners.

* Only home fans will be allowed to attend the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate this month, officials from both clubs have said. The first match of the final will be played at Boca's La Bombonera on Saturday, with the return leg scheduled for November 24 at River's El Monumental.

* England: Striker Romelu Lukaku and defender Diogo Dalot missed training on Tuesday ahead of Manchester United's Champions League match at Juventus but captain Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini returned. The match in Turin on Wednesday pits Juve's Cristiano Ronaldo against the team he played for from 2003-09.

* Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has defended the Premier League champions as 'incredibly professional' in response to allegations they bent financial fair play rules.

* truggling Serie A club Empoli named Giuseppe Iachini as their new coach on Tuesday, a day after dismissing Aurelio Andreazzoli. Iachini has led four different clubs out of Serie B and into the top flight, although his first task with Empoli will be to avoid relegation. The Tuscan side have lost seven of their 11 Serie A games this season and are 18th in the 20-team table with six points.

* Brazilian Sergio Sette Camara has joined McLaren's young driver programme in a test and development role, the Formula One team said on Tuesday. The 20-year-old was Formula Two team mate this year to Lando Norris, the British teenager who will make his F1 race debut with McLaren next season in an all-new lineup with Spaniard Carlos Sainz.

* A breakaway European Super League, involving top clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United, would have "serious and lasting implications" for professional football across the continent, the umbrella group representing domestic leagues said on Tuesday. The European Leagues group, which represents 25 domestic leagues including England's Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga and Spain's La Liga, voiced its "strong opposition" to any such plan.

* Extensive online engagement is an essential part of building fresh success for Manchester United, the club's group managing director Richard Arnold said on Tuesday. Arnold was speaking at the Web Summit in Lisbon and outlined the club's widespread involvement with their global online fan-base which he said amounted to 659 million followers.

* Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde hailed the Champions League's capacity to thrill after his side's electrifying 1-1 draw with Inter Milan on Tuesday, saying there was no need for a European Super League. With a combined eight European Cup wins between them, the game at the San Siro was the main attraction of Europe's elite competition this week and the fixture certainly lived up to expectations.

* Mauricio Pochettino remains optimistic his Tottenham Hotspur side can reach the Champions League last 16 after Harry Kane's late brace earned them a vital 2-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven at Wembley on Tuesday. Playing their fourth match in eight days, Tottenham dug deep after Luuk de Jong put the Dutch champions in front after 61 seconds -- the quickest goal Tottenham have conceded in the competition.

* Retired two times swimming world champion Filippo Magnini was handed a four-year ban by Italy's anti-doping agency on Tuesday along with ex-relay team mate Michele Santucci. The agency, NADO Italia, had sought an eight-year term for actual or attempted doping in a case linked to nutritionist Guido Porcellini, who was given a 30-year ban in July for anti-doping violations. Magnini, who has not tested positive and had been a critic of doping, denied the charges and said he would appeal.
