The draw took place at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 7, with 44 teams placed into 11 groups of four teams.

In the group stage, the teams will play in a round robin to decide the 11 group winners and the four best runners-up that will advance into the finals.

As the tournament hosts, Thailand have automatically qualified regardless of the qualification results. So if they win their group or are among the four best runners-up, the opportunity will be given to the fifth best runner-up.

Defender Doan Van Hau is one of Vietnam's most anticipated players at the 2020 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers.

Vietnam will host all of the Group K matches, which is expected to be a big advantage for Park Hang-seo’s side as they aim to top the group.

After finishing as the overall runners-up at the 2018 AFC U23 Championship in China, there remain many quality players in the Vietnamese squad for the 2020 tournament, such as goalkeeper Bui Tien Dung, defender Doan Van Hau, midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai, and forward Ha Duc Chinh.
