Solari approved by Spanish federation as Real Madrid's permanent manager

Santiago Solari’s appointment as Real Madrid’s permanent manager has been approved by the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF), a spokesman told Reuters on Monday.

The 42-year-old Argentine has led the team to four wins in four games since replacing Julen Lopetegui at the helm of the European champions two weeks ago.

* Everton mifielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has been withdrawn from Iceland's squad ahead of their Nations League clash against Belgium due to an ankle injury, the Football Association of Iceland said on Monday. Sigurdsson sustained the injury following a collision with Chelsea's Jorginho during a 0-0 Premier League draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

* Monaco's owners have backed Thierry Henry as coach, just hours after his side were beaten 4-0 by Paris St Germain to extend Henry's winless run at his new club to six games. Vadim Vasilyev, Monaco's vice-president, said they would not bow to mounting pressure and fire Henry, who has drawn two and lost four matches since succeeding Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim.

* AC Milan forward Gonzalo Higuain has apologised for getting dismissed against Juventus, the club that sent him to San Siro on loan this season, during a 2-0 defeat on Sunday in which he also missed a first-half penalty. Enraged after being penalised following a collision with Juventus defender Medhi Benatia, the former Real Madrid and Napoli forward was booked for dissent, then given another yellow immediately afterwards for continuing to protest.

* Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez will miss two months and midfielder Casemiro around three weeks, according to reports in Spain, as the club's injury crisis deepens. Both players were substituted after sustaining problems during Madrid's 4-2 La Liga win at Celta Vigo on Sunday.

* Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial have withdrawn from the France squad for matches against the Netherlands and Uruguay due to injury, the French Football Federation said on Monday. Pogba was diagnosed with a muscular lesion in his left thigh while Martial suffered an adductor issue.

* France number one Richard Gasquet said on Monday he had pulled out of this month's Davis Cup final against Croatia, with French media reporting that he has a groin injury. The 32-year-old Gasquet, whose last appearance was at the Paris Masters in October, wrote on Twitter that he was "extremely disappointed" at having to withdraw, with France bidding to retain the title.

* Deportivo Cali defender Juan Quintero narrowly escaped injury when his car was shot at after the Colombian team failed to make the first division playoffs, local media reported on Monday. Quintero was in a car with his brother following the game against Pasto when two men on a motorcycle sprayed his car with bullets, he told Colombian reporters.

* Celta Vigo sacked coach Antonio Mohamed on Monday and replaced him with Portuguese Miguel Cardoso after a poor start to the season that has left them 14th in La Liga. The Galician club have three wins from 12 matches and lost 4-2 at home to European champions Real Madrid on Sunday under Argentine Mohamed who replaced Juan Carlos Unzue in May.

* European soccer's governing body UEFA said on Monday Financial Fair Play (FFP) investigations could be reopened after the publication of leaked documents about the finances of Manchester City and Paris St Germain. The 'Football Leaks' documents, showing the two clubs had inflated sponsorship revenues to meet UEFA's FFP requirements, were obtained by the German publication Der Spiegel and reviewed by Reuters in partnership with European Investigative Collaborations, a consortium of international media.

* Six-times champion Roger Federer cancelled his practice session at the ATP Finals on Monday, the day after losing his opening round-robin match to Kei Nishikori at the O2 Arena. Federer, making his 16th appearance at the ATP’s showpiece finale, had not lost any of his previous 45 round-robin matches in straight sets before his 7-6(4) 6-3 loss to the Japanese player.

* Over 5,300 runners from 52 countries and regions will compete in Havana's annual Marabana marathon on Sunday, according to the organising committee. In addition to a full marathon, the Marabana features a half marathon, 5km and 10km races, along with events for competitors with disabilities.

* Paraguay will meet South Africa in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge charity match next month, the South American nation's football association said on Monday.

* Barcelona midfielder Rafinha has been recalled to Brazil's squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Cameroon, the Brazilian Football Confederation said on Monday. The 25-year-old replaces Real Madrid's Casemiro, who suffered an ankle injury in the European champions' 4-2 victory over Celta Vigo in La Liga on Sunday.
