Rooney to wear 10 shirt, captain's armband in England farewell

Wayne Rooney will wear the number 10 shirt and captain’s armband when he comes on for his final England appearance in Thursday’s friendly with the United States, manager Gareth Southgate said.

Rooney, who now plays in Major League Soccer for D.C United, will start on the bench before entering the field for his 120th and final cap in the international at Wembley Stadium.

* Manchester City's France full back Benjamin Mendy has undergone surgery on his left knee, the Premier League champions said on Wednesday. City gave no timescale for the player's return, but British media reported that Mendy, who missed the majority of last season with a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee, would be sidelined for several weeks.

* European clubs are committed to working with UEFA on the future of competitions such as the Champions League, the European soccer body said on Wednesday in the wake of reports that a breakaway Super League was back on the agenda.

* In-form Germany winger Marco Reus will not play in Thursday's friendly international against Russia due to a foot injury and is doubtful for their Nations League match against Netherlands next week, said Germany coach Joachim Loew. The Borussia Dortmund winger is playing a sensational season for the unbeaten Bundesliga leaders, having scored eight goals and set up another four in their 11 matches so far.

* Bayern Munich's attacking midfielder James Rodriguez will be out of action for several weeks, the German record champions confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday.

* Polish tennis player Agnieszka Radwanska said on Wednesday that she has decided to end her 13 year-long career due to health reasons. Radwanska reached a career high world singles ranking of number two in 2012 after finishing as runner-up at Wimbledon. She won the season ending WTA Finals in 2015.

* New Zealand have pipped Australia in the race to host the 2021 women's Rugby World Cup, the sport's governing body announced on Wednesday.

* British sports-car maker McLaren Automotive opened a 50-million pound northern English factory on Wednesday where it will make carbon fibre chassis, moving production from Austria in a decision initiated before Brexit.

* Italian Claudio Ranieri has been appointed the new manager of Fulham, replacing Slavisa Jokanovic, the struggling Premier League club said on Wednesday. Serb Jokanovic led Fulham into the top flight from the second-tier Championship via the playoffs last season but the London club have made a poor start and are bottom of the league with one win in 12 games.

* Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain will take on second-division Orleans in the Parisians' quest for their sixth straight French League Cup title after the round of 16 draw was made on Wednesday.
