National Games 2018: Hanoi dominate in rowing, diving

The final competitions of the rowing events at the ongoing 2018 National Games wrapped up on November 23, seeing Hanoi top the table in rowing after five days of competition.

The rowing events were attended by 14 units from provinces, cities and sectors, competing in 19 events.

With the expectation of professionals, the Hanoi team, with well trained staff, won nine gold and two bronze medals to claim first place, followed by Da Nang with four golds, four silvers and two bronzes and Ho Chi Minh City with two golds, one silver and two bronzes.

After the rowing ends, a competition in canoeing will take place in Hanoi’s West Lake from November 26 to 30.

Hanoi also proved its strength in diving as the athletes won seven gold medals out of the total 13 golds of the diving event at the Games, along with six silvers and one bronze, to claim the top spot in diving after the event’s final competition on November 23. Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh won two gold medals each, but HCM City took second place in diving as they won five silvers. Hai Phong were in third with one silver and five bronze medals, one bronze more than the Quang Ninh team.

Yesterday, the Bac Lieu team won the championship in four-man team petanque, thanks to Thach Lam, Danh Hong, Thach Dong and Hoi Giang, while hosts Hanoi topped the triples event thanks to Van Dung, Van Thanh and Nguyen Thi Loan.

Also on November 23, cyclists continued their races in Hoa Binh province, with both the men’s and women’s 1.5 km mountain biking. Quang Thi Soan (Son La) won the women's gold medal, while the male championship title belonged to Tong Thanh Tuyen (the army team).
