Hanoi maintain National Games reign with four additional golds

Hanoi athletes claimed four additional gold medals (three in pencak silat and one in handball) on November 26 to maintain their reign atop the 2018 National Games tally with 34 golds, leaving behind Ho Chi Minh City with 22 and Binh Duong with just eight.

The pencak silat competition entered its sixth day on Monday, with six final matches in demonstration categories.

Hanoi showed their dominance by accounting for half of the titles, thanks to Vu Tien Dung in the men’s singles Senni – Tunggal; Nguyen Thi Huyen and Nguyen Thi Thu Ha in the women’s doubles Senni – Ganda; and Luu Van Nam, Nguyen Xuan Thanh and Vu Tien Dung in the men’s triples Senni – Regu event.

The remaining pencak silat gold medals of the day went to the contenders from Binh Phuoc (women’s singles Senni – Tunggal), Quang Ninh (men’s doubles Senni – Ganda) and Phu Tho (women’s triples Senni – Regu)

The pencak silat competition continues today with the men’s and women’s semifinal combat matches.

Hanoi won the women’s handball title by beating the Ho Chi Minh City opponents 31-23 in the final clash, but lost the men’s crown to the City team following their final defeat of 19-27.

On the same day, the semifinalists of the singles and doubles tennis events were decided, with Vietnam’s no. 1 player Ly Hoang Nam (Binh Duong) easily stunning HCM City’s Tat Thai Nguyen 6-2, 6-1 to set up a men’s singles semifinal clash against third seeded Hoang Thanh Trung.

Trinh Linh Giang won a Binh Duong quarterfinal derby against Nguyen Van Phuong to set up the remaining semifinal with Hanoi’s Nguyen Dac Tien, who finished off Da Nang’s Nguyen Le Minh Hau 6-1, 6-1.

The two men’s doubles semifinal matches will be Ly Hoang Nam / Trinh Linh Giang vs Xuan Hau / Dac Tien, and Minh Quan / Quoc Khanh vs Van Phuong / Khanh Duy. The women’s doubles semifinals see Nhu Quynh / Thanh Truc (HCM City) play Csilla / Thanh Binh (Da Nang), and Be Xuyen / Kim Ngan (the Army team) face Dai Trang / Minh Trang (HCM City).

On November 26, the diving competition witnessed three new national records and four new National Games records broken.

The men’s football, canoeing and table tennis competitions officially commenced on Monday.
