Vietnam’s young chess master joins Asian Championships

World U8 champion Nguyen Le Cam Hien and her teammates are taking part at the Asian Youth Chess Championships to be held in Sri Lanka from April 1-10.

At the tournament, Nguyen Le Cam Hien will play in the U12 age group and is seeded No. 4. Her main opponents are Nurmanua Alua from Kazakhstan, Gankhulug from Mongolia, and Ferdousi from Bangladesh.

Besides Nguyen Le Cam Hien, the Vietnamese team also has 34 other players competing at all age groups including U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 in both the boys’ and girls’ events.

At last year’s tournament, Hien grabbed a silver medal, while Vietnam secured 7 gold, 23 silver and 13 bronze medals, ranking second after India.

Nguyen Le Cam Hien became the second Vietnamese player to earn a world title after her successful performance at the World Youth and Cadets Chess Championships that ended in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece, in 2015.
