Mercedes make F1 history with fourth one-two in a row

Mercedes added another first to the Formula One record books on Sunday as the only team to win the opening four races of a season with a perfect four one-two finishes.

Five times world champion Lewis Hamilton and team mate Valtteri Bottas both have two wins and two second places each, with the latter ahead by one point thanks to the fastest lap set in Australia in March. Bottas won in Baku on Sunday, denying Hamilton a third successive win after Bahrain and China.

* Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk was named Player of the Year by England's Professional Footballers' Association on Sunday, becoming the fourth player from the Netherlands to win the award. The 27-year-old has transformed Liverpool's defence since joining the club from Southampton in January last year and has helped the title-chasing Merseysiders keep 19 clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

* AC Milan’s hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League suffered a setback after they were beaten 2-0 by Torino on Sunday, their first Serie A defeat to the Turin club since November 2001. The win lifted Torino to 56 points, level with Milan, but the Turin club move ahead of Gennaro Gattuso’s side and Atalanta into fifth place due to their superior head-to-head record over both sides.

* Bayern Munich stumbled to a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Nuremberg on Sunday to leave the Bundesliga title race wide open with three games left in the season. The result leaves Bayern top on 71 points with Borussia Dortmund in second place on 69 after Saturday's 4-2 home loss to Schalke 04 in the Ruhr valley derby.

* Two goals from Felipe Caicedo spurred Lazio to a 2-1 win over 10-man Sampdoria in Serie A on Sunday and keep their European qualification hopes alive. Lazio remain three points adrift of city rivals AS Roma in the fourth and final Champions League qualifying spot.

* Stephanie Frappart became the first female referee to officiate a French Ligue 1 match when she took charge of the game between Amiens and Strasbourg on Sunday. Frappart, the only referee from France who will be officiating at the Women's World Cup to be held in the country from June 7 to July 7, was also the first woman to officiate a Ligue 2 (second-tier) match.

* Arsenal Women sealed the Women's Super League title with a game to spare after a 4-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Falmer Stadium on Sunday. With 51 points from 19 games, Arsenal took an unassailable four-points lead with one game to go this season. Manchester City (47 points) will finish second while Birmingham City (37) and Chelsea (36) fight it out for third spot.

* World number five Dominic Thiem captured his second title of the year after thrashing Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-4 6-0 in the Barcelona Open final on Sunday. The Austrian had been beaten by Rafael Nadal in his previous appearance in the Barcelona final in 2017 but after knocking out the 11-times French Open champion in the semi-finals, Thiem easily dispatched the 23-year-old Medvedev.

* Spain's Jorge Campillo birdied two of his last three holes to claim a maiden success on the European Tour with a two-shot victory in the Hassan II Golf Trophy at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat on Sunday. Campillo, who had six runner-up finishes before finally claiming a win in his 229th appearance on the tour, finished with a 71 for a total of nine under-par.

* World number three Petra Kvitova beat Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-3 7-6(2) to win Stuttgart's Porsche Grand Prix on Sunday on Sunday for her second title of the year as she prepares for next month's French Open.

* Italy's Matteo Berrettini came back from a set down to beat Serbia's Filip Krajinovic 4-6 6-3 6-1 to win the Hungarian Open in Budapest on Sunday.

* Second-placed Lille moved one step closer to securing Champions League qualification with a commanding 5-0 win over Nimes to move six points ahead of Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

* Girona snapped a six-game losing streak by beating Sevilla 1-0 at home on Sunday to climb out of the La Liga relegation zone and ease pressure on coach Eusebio Sacristan while harming Sevilla's chances of finishing in the top four.

* Napoli pushed Frosinone towards relegation with a 2-0 away victory in Serie A on Sunday as Dries Mertens equalled Diego Maradona’s league scoring record. The Belgian’s superb first-half free kick was his 81st league strike for Napoli, sending him level with the Argentine at number three in the club's all-time Serie A scoring charts, behind Antonio Vojak (102 goals) and Marek Hamsik (100).

* Barcelona dug deep after having a player sent off to beat Bayern Munich 1-0 on Sunday and reach the final of the Women's Champions League for the first time after securing a 2-0 aggregate victory.

* Kenya's Brigid Kosgei improved on last year's second place to win her first London Marathon title on Sunday, finishing ahead of reigning champion Vivian Cheruiyot, with fellow Kenyan and three-times winner Mary Keitany down in fifth.

* Fabio Cannavaro quitted the coaching spot of China's national soccer team, the Italian announced in his social media on Sunday's night. The current Guangzhou Evergrande's coach took over Team China and led the team to participate the China Cup last month, but he rejected to disclose his future in this team after the tournament until the end of April.

* The archery venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games was officially unveiled on Sunday, becoming the first of the Games’ new venues to be completed. Yumenoshima Park Archery Field, located on a former landfill site, was set for completion in May.
