Quang Liem unbeaten after first four Rapid games at IMSA Mind Games

Vietnamese chess ace Le Quang Liem has gone four games undefeated in the Rapid category of the ongoing IMSA Mind Games 2019 in China.

Liem recorded three draws against Yu Yangyi of China (Elo 2784, seed no. 2), Anton Korobov of Ukraine (Elo 2756, seed no. 4) and Gefland Boris of Israel (Elo 2719, seed no. 8), and one victory over Peter Leko of Hungary (Elo 2702, seed no. 11) in the third game.

The four-game unbeaten streak has helped the Vietnamese star add 13.8 Elo points to his world Rapid rating.

After the first four rounds, Liem temporarily stood in the second group with 2.5 points, half a point behind the leading group of two players. In the fifth game today, he will play seed no. 9 Vladimir Fedoseev of Russia (Elo 2718).

The IMSA Mind Games 2019 is taking place in Hengshui, China, from May 14 to 18, with competitions in bridge, chess, draughts, Go, and Xiangqi (Chinese chess). In chess, 16 players are competing in separate open and women’s sections in the Rapid and Blitz events.

World no. 40 Le Quang Liem is competing against 15 chess masters rated 2600+, including Domiguez Perez (US, world no. 12), Rachard Rapport (Hungary, world no. 24), Andreikin (Russia, world no. 29), and three representatives of hosts China: Yu Yangyi (world no. 19), Wang Hao (world no. 21) and Bu Xiangzhi (world no. 29).

With a Rapid elo of 2706, Liem is seeded 10th in the Rapid competition, to be held from May 14 to 16, with a prize fund of US$75,000.

The Blitz category, slated for May 17-18, sees Liem seeded ninth with an elo rating of 2699. He will play the opener against Andreikin of Russia (Elo 2793).
