Ajax win Dutch league title for 34th time

Ajax Amsterdam clinched the Dutch league title by finishing the season with a 4-1 win at De Graafschap on Wednesday. Ajax’s first title since 2014 and a record-extending 34th overall completed the double after they won the KNVB Cup earlier this month.

* Two late goals gave Lazio a 2-0 Coppa Italia final win over Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday. It was the seventh time Lazio have won the competition and their first triumph since 2013, the capital club’s victory ending four years of Juventus dominance in Italy’s domestic cup competition.

* Derby County moved a step closer to the Premier League after reaching the Championship playoff final with a 4-2 win over Leeds United on Wednesday (May 15), as they roared back from a two-goal aggregate deficit to win 4-3 over two legs.

* FIFA is hoping that over a billion viewers tune in to the Women's World Cup in France as it continues strategic efforts to grow the game around the globe, but the governing body is still subject to criticism over gender equality.

* Former Wales manager Chris Coleman was sacked as coach of struggling Hebei China Fortune on Wednesday (May 15) after the club's fans demanded his firing. The 48-year-old's side have won only once in nine Chinese Super League (CSL) games this season and languish one place off the bottom of the table.

* Genoa, Italy's oldest professional football club, will be put up for sale, the Serie A outfit said in a statement. Founded in 1893, the club has been owned by Enrico Preziosi, head of Italy’s largest toy manufacturer, for the last 16 years. The announcement came with Genoa one point and one place above the Serie A relegation zone with two matches to play.

* Former Ivory Coast and Belgium manager Marc Wilmots has arrived in Tehran and is set to sign a three-year deal as national coach, state news agency IRNA reported.

* Roger Federer was among dozens of players kept off court by rain on a chilly Wednesday (May 15) at the Italian Open as organisers refused to provide refunds in case of a total washout.

* Levski Sofia have appointed former Bulgaria boss Petar Hubchev as their head coach, the 26-times Bulgarian champions said on Wednesday. The 55-year-old former defender quit as national team coach after their first two Euro 2020 qualifiers, becoming the 10th Bulgaria manager to be sacked or leave the post since 2007.

* German champion Pascal Ackermann took his second stage win of the Giro d'Italia in a sprint finish through torrential rain on Wednesday while injured former race winner Tom Dumoulin pulled out.

* Russian Formula Two driver Nikita Mazepin set the fastest lap for Mercedes on his official test debut with the Formula One world champions at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on Wednesday.

* Twice champion Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the French Open after failing to recover fully from shoulder surgery, the former world number one said on Wednesday. The 32-year-old, who has won five Grand Slam titles, has not played since the end of January and underwent shoulder surgery at the end of February.
