Kroos extends Real Madrid deal until 2023

Real Madrid’s Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has renewed his contract until the end of the 2022-23 season, the Spanish club announced on Monday.

The 29-year-old Kroos was expected to leave the Santiago Bernabeu according to Spanish media reports but he has instead has extended his stay for another four years. He signed for the club from Bayern Munich in 2014 and has made 233 appearances, winning 11 trophies.

* Caster Semenya will compete in the 3,000 metres at the Diamond League's Prefontaine Classic in Stanford, California on Jun 30, a distance she can race without reducing her testosterone levels.

* Osasuna sealed their promotion to La Liga on Monday with three games to spare after Granada beat Albacete 1-0. The Navarra side, relegated from the top flight in 2017, lead Spain's second division on 78 points from 39 games and are guaranteed to finish in the top two after third-place Albacete's home defeat left them 10 points adrift.

* Bob Fernley, who was appointed last year to run McLaren's Indianapolis 500 effort, has left the team after double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso failed to qualify for next weekend's race.

* Brighton & Hove Albion have appointed Graham Potter as their new manager on a four-year contract from Championship side Swansea City, the Premier League club said on Monday. Potter, who turned 44 on Monday, will replace Chris Hughton, who was sacked last week after the south-coast club narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight.

* Steve Clarke has been named as the new Scotland manager on a three-year contract, the Scottish Football Association announced in a statement on Monday. The 55-year-old succeeds Alex McLeish, who was sacked after a disappointing start to the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

* Manchester United's outgoing right-back Antonio Valencia was among 14 foreign-based players named in Ecuador's Copa America squad on Monday. Others include Sao Paulo defender Robert Arboleda, Minnesota United winger Romario Ibarra and Tigres UANL forward Enner Valencia.

* Thanks to her victory in Rome, Czech Karolina Pliskova climbed up to the world No. 2 in the latest women's tennis rankings. Naomi Osaka of Japan retained her top place in the rankings with 6,486 points, followed by Karolina Pliskova (5,685) who won her second title of the clay court season, and Simona Halep of Romania (5,533).

* Novak Djokovic keeps his lead in the latest men's tennis rankings of the ATP even after he lost to Rafael Nadal of Spain in the final of Italian Open. The Serb has 12,355 points ranking first, followed by Spain's Rafael Nadal (7,945) and Roger Federer of Switzerland (5,950).

* Paderborn capitalised on Union Berlin's two-all draw with Bochum to climb into German top flight Bundesliga after the last round in Bundesliga 2 on Sunday. Another promotion berth was secured by Cologne two weeks ago.

* Egypt on Sunday unveiled the mascot for next month's African Cup of Nations, named "TUT" and adorned like an ancient Egyptian pharaoh.
