Motorcycling: Marquez smashes lap record to take pole in Italy

Honda’s world champion Marc Marquez secured his fourth pole position of the MotoGP season on Saturday ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, edging out Fabio Quartararo at the end of a dramatic qualifying session.

Championship leader Marquez smashed the lap record at Mugello with his final effort of one minute, 45.519 seconds, eclipsing Quartararo on the Petronas Yamaha by 0.214 seconds. Danilo Petrucci, who had emerged as the pole favorite following his strong morning practice pace, will start third on his Ducati to complete the front row at Sunday’s race.

* American long jumper and sprinter Jarrion Lawson has been suspended for four years after testing positive for the banned substance epitrenbolone, the Athletics Integrity Unit said on Saturday. Lawson, the world long jump silver medallist, has denied any wrongdoing, saying the substance could have entered his body through the consumption of tainted beef.

* Two-times major champion Martin Kaymer surged into a two-stroke lead over Adam Scott after the third round at the Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio on Saturday. Kaymer, without a win since his eight-shot victory at the 2014 US Open, notched six birdies in a six-under-par 66 at Muirfield Village. The German signed for a 15-under 201 total with one round left.

* Celine Boutier of France birdied her final hole to move within one stroke of Japanese leader Mamiko Higa after the second round at the US Women's Open in Charleston, South Carolina, on Saturday.

* Italian Serie A soccer club ACF Fiorentina said on Saturday its owners were negotiating a sale, confirming earlier media reports. In a statement, the club said its board had resigned after being informed by the Della Valle family that a sale process was under way.

* The Netherlands got the perfect farewell as they headed off to the women's World Cup on Saturday when they beat Australia 3-0 in a friendly played in front of a record crowd of 30,640 at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven.

* Stan Wawrinka believes he is playing his best tennis since undergoing surgery on his knee but said it was premature to start thinking about winning a second French Open title after beating Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.

* Tributes have poured in for former Spain international winger, Jose Antonio Reyes who died in a traffic accident on Saturday. The 35-year-old was killed along with two of his cousins when the car they were travelling in went off the road and caught fire after he had trained with his current club, Extremadura. Reyes began his career with Sevilla before joining Arsenal in 2004 where he formed part of their 'Invincibles' squad. He then spent time with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid before returning to Sevilla and spending time with Espanyol, Cordoba and Chinese club, Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard.

* Sven Ulreich will replace injured Bernd Leno for the two upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers, the German FA announced in an official statement on Saturday. The German squad travel to Belarus on June 8 before they host Estonia three days later in Mainz.

* The organiSers of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Saturday unveiled the torchbearer uniform design based on the torch relay concept "Hope Lights Our Way." The torchbearer uniform features the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay emblem on the front and the Olympic symbol on the back, representing different countries, cultures and ways of thinking.
