Hazard could be catalyst for new Real Madrid era – Martinez

Real Madrid can build a new team around latest signing Eden Hazard, his Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said on the eve of their Euro 2020 qualifier against Scotland on Monday. Real ended their long pursuit of the winger on Friday when they agreed to sign him from Chelsea on a five-year contract for a reported 100 million euros (£89 million).

* Departing Bayern Munich defender Rafinha is returning home to join Brazilian club Flamengo, the Bundesliga champions confirmed on Monday (Jun 10). The 33-year-old bid farewell to Bayern last month after eight years at the club, and his contract officially expires on June 30.

* Former world number one Maria Sharapova is set to return to the tour after accepting a wildcard entry at the Mallorca Open, four months after undergoing surgery on her right shoulder.

* Five-times Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will play in the Birmingham grasscourt event later this month after accepting a wildcard. The 38-year-old American has never played in the competition before but will join French Open champion Ashleigh Barty and world number one Naomi Osaka in the draw as the build-up to Wimbledon continues.

* Ferrari announced on Monday (Jun 10) their intention to appeal the controversial five-second time penalty that cost Sebastian Vettel his first victory of the season in the Canadian Grand Prix.

* Double Olympic 800 metres champion Caster Semenya has been included in South Africa's preliminary team for this year's world championships in Doha, though it is dependent on the outcome of her appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.

* France coach Didier Deschamps said on Monday that Olympique Lyonnais left back Ferland Mendy will join Real Madrid. Spanish media reports said Real had agreed a fee of 55 million euros (£49 million) for Mendy, who has made 79 appearances for Lyon since moving from Le Havre in 2017.

* Fifteen Serie A clubs have come out against the European Club Association's controversial plans to reform the Champions League, which are being backed by Italian giants Juventus, according to reports in Italy on Tuesday (Jun 10). Juventus president Andrea Agnelli last week defended plans to reform the Champions League at a UEFA congress as an attempt to save smaller clubs from “the protectionism of the big five leagues”.
