Vietnamese shuttler surges into Mongolia International Challenge semifinals

Vietnam’s badminton ace, Nguyen Thuy Linh, qualified for the women’s singles semifinals at the ongoing 2019 Mongolia International Challenge on June 28.

Thuy Linh, no. 2 seed and world no. 43, blew past Insyirah Khan of Indonesia 21-10, 21-13 in the opening round before making light work of the host player, Lkhagvasuren, with a score of 21-2, 21-3 in the second round.

The quarterfinal clash on Friday saw Linh display stable form by finishing off no. 7 seed Vaishnavi Reddy Jakka (India) 21-12, 21-10 to make the last four.

Next up for the Vietnamese star will be a semifinal match against world no. 69 and no. 3 seed Sim Yu-jin (Republic of Korea) on the morning of June 29.

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles quarterfinals, the two Vietnamese representatives, Pham Cao Cuong (world no. 83) and Le Duc Phat (world no. 188), failed to advance further following their respective losses against no. 2 seed Kulavut Vitdsarn (Thailand, world no. 70) and top seed Subhankar Dey (India, world no. 40).

The 2019 Mongolia International Challenge offers an opportunity for participants to accumulate points in the hunt for places in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
