At Tam Ky stadium in Quang Nam province, hosts Quang Nam and opponents Hoang Anh Gia Lai played quite cautiously, forcing the game to move at a relatively slow speed, with neither side creating a scoring chance in the first half.

In the second half, both teams attempted for the opener, in which the advantage was inclined to Hoang Anh Gia Lai with the continuous threats from strikers Van Toan and Van Thanh. However, the defensive line of Quang Nam was focused to resolved all threats from the visitors.

The match was balanced at the end of the second half, but both failed to score and, after more than 90 minutes of play without a goal, the game was forced into penalty shootouts to determine the winners, as the tournament rules exclude the extra time rule.

Quang Nam went on to win 5-4 in the shootouts, with only Gia Lai’s Le Van Son having failed to convert his spot kick, costing his team the ticket to the semi-finals.

In the other quarter-final match the same day, at Lach Tray Stadium, hosts Hai Phong could not convert their home advantage into goals against Ho Chi Minh City FC. Drawing 0-0 after two halves, the two had to go on to penalty shootouts and the City were lucky to win 5-3, thus booking a slot in the semi-finals.
