This is the third time that the tournament has been held, following the first and second tournaments in the Philippines and Thailand in 2015 and 2017, respectively.
The 13 teams are Australia, China, Hong Kong (China), India, Kazakhstan, Macao (China), Maldives, New Zealand, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
The tournament is an occasion for young women volleyball players to enhance their skills and strengthen cooperation between volleyball associations in the region, said Tran Duc Phan, head of the organising committee.
The competition also offers Vietnamese women players a good opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games, which are scheduled for late 2019 in the Philippines.
Following the opening ceremony, a match took place between Vietnam and New Zealand where the hosts beat the guests 3-0.
In the afternoon of July 13, Thailand lost 1-3 to the DPRK while Chinese Taipei lost 0-3 to China. In other games, Hong Kong beat Sri Lanka 3-0 and Kazakhstan overcame Macao with the same score.
The tournament will last until July 21.
