Influential Pogba must stay at Man United, says Mata

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is a positive influence in the dressing room and must extend his stay at the club to help bring trophies back to Old Trafford, team mate Juan Mata said.

Pogba said last month that he could seek a new challenge after three years at United, while his agent recently told The Times that the 26-year-old intends to leave the club amid reports linking him to Juventus and Real Madrid. However, Mata wants Pogba’s future to include United winning “big trophies” in 2019-20 campaign, having failed to lift a major trophy since their Europa League triumph in May 2017.

* Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain on Monday launched a brand new Parc des Princes experience that will enable supporters to discover the stadium and learn about history of the club in an interactive and immersive manner. The experience is built on the latest virtual reality and immersive video technology, and made up of three parts: PSG stadium tour, history room and PSG VR arcade.

* FC Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic insisted on Monday that he aims to continue his career with the Liga Santander champions. The 31-year-old, who joined Barca from Sevilla in 2014, has two years left to run on his current contract. He has been the subject of speculation over his future since the arrival of midfielder Frenkie De Jong from Ajax, but insists he has no plans to move.

* Sevilla's Joris Gnagnon has apologised for the horrific tackle which left Liverpool's 18-year-old left back Yasser Larouci waiting to see if he has suffered a major injury. The challenge happened towards the end of Sevilla's 2-1 win over the European Champions in Boston on Sunday night. Gnagnon was late with his challenge and hacked Larouci to the ground before being dismissed with a direct red card.

* The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) on Monday announced that Japanese Emperor Naruhito has accepted the role of the Honorary Patron of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. The announcement followed a formal request by Tokyo 2020 submitted through the national government.

* The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games on Monday unveiled four new robots which will be deployed to assist spectators, athletes and officials at competition venues and to relay sound, images and physical feedback from venues to staff watching remotely.

* Three-time Grand Slam doubles winner, eminent Australian tennis player Peter McNamara has died from prostate cancer at the age of 64, according to Australian media reports on Monday. Born in Melbourne, he snatched five singles and 19 doubles titles, reaching a career-high No. 7 in singles in 1983.

* Dinamo Bucharest coach Eugen Neagoe suffered a heart attack during his club's match against Universitatea Craiova in the Romanian league on Sunday but later was stable in hospital. The 18-times Romanian champions said that the 51-year-old was taken to Floreasca Hospital in an ambulance and is able to communicate.

* Newcastle United have been reported to the Premier League by Championship club Sheffield Wednesday over the appointment of the Owls' former manager Steve Bruce. The much-travelled Bruce, 58, quit the Yorkshire club last Monday following talks with Newcastle, who named him as manager on Wednesday to replace the departed Rafa Benitez. Second tier side Wednesday responded by saying they were disappointed to hear the news of Bruce's appointment via a public statement and were taking legal advice.

* Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane said on Monday he had not "disrespected" Gareth Bale and it was the club who wanted to sell the Welsh forward, not him personally. Bale did not play for Real in their 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the International Champions Cup on Saturday, with Zidane revealing his absence was due to the club "working on his departure".

* Arsenal manager Unai Emery said on Monday that Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos was someone he admired as the Premier League club work on bringing in one player. The Gunners have yet to make a marquee signing in this transfer window, but British media have reported that Ceballos, 22, is close to completing a season-long loan move to London.

* Brazil have parted ways with Vadao, the coach of their women's football team, the country's football confederation said on Monday. Vadao, who previously coached the team for two years from 2014, was removed just four weeks after Brazil were knocked out the World Cup by France.

* Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo will face no charges in Las Vegas in connection with a 10-year-old sexual assault allegation because the case cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, prosecutors said on Monday. Ronaldo, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time and plays for the Italian club Juventus, has maintained he is innocent of rape.

* Manchester United have promoted Nicky Butt to the new position of head of first team development, reporting directly to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the club announced on Monday. The ex-England midfielder, who played 387 games for United, has moved up from Head of Academy to help "create a seamless journey for young players stepping up to the next level".

* Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu has joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said on Monday. Ampadu, 18, struggled for first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge last season and will be looking to build on a bright start to his senior career, having already made eight appearances for Wales.
