* Former England captain Wayne Rooney is in advanced talks with Derby County about joining the Championship (second-tier) club as player-coach, Sky Sports News reported on Monday. Derby's new Dutch manager Phillip Cocu declined to comment on the reports but Sky said England's record goalscorer was due to fly to the Midlands to discuss the details of the deal.
* Belgian cyclist Bjorg Lambrecht has died after crashing during the third stage of the Tour of Poland, the 22-year-old's Lotto Soudal team announced on Monday. Lambrecht was taken to hospital in a helicopter following the crash which occurred around 96km from the end of the Chorzow to Zabrze stage.
* Last season's semi-finalists Ajax Amsterdam will take on APOEL Nicosia or Qarabag for a Champions League group stage spot if they overcome PAOK in the third qualifying round, UEFA said following the draw on Monday. Ajax take on Greek champions PAOK the first leg of the third qualifying round of Europe's elite club competition on Tuesday, with the return leg set to take place in Amsterdam next week. The two-legged playoff round will then be held on Aug. 20-21 and Aug. 27-28, European soccer's governing body added.
* Belgian side Club Brugge have signed goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Premier League team Liverpool for an undisclosed fee, both clubs confirmed on Monday. Mignolet was part of the Liverpool squad that claimed the Champions League crown last season and ends a six-year spell at Anfield in which he made more than 200 appearances in all competitions.
* Three top contenders for the 2019 BWF World Championships - China's Shi Yuqi, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Spain's Carolina Marin - will miss the upcoming tournament in Basel, Switzerland due to injury. The three separately announced their withdrawals in the days leading up to Monday’s draw.
* The organisers of next year's Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games on Monday held a large-scale anti-terrorism drill in the Tokyo Bay area, as part of preparations for next summer. More than 110 people from the Japan Coast Guard, Metropolitan Police, Tokyo Fire Department and other organisations took part in the drill, which was held near Harumi Pier, the site of the athletes' village and many other events.
* Australia's U-23 men's football team will gain international experience in early September, as Football Federation Australia announced on Monday that the Olyroos will play New Zealand in a two-match series ahead of the forthcoming Olympic Games qualification. Australia will take on New Zealand at home on September 6 and 9 as both teams seek to advance their preparations ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification tournaments.
* Novak Djokovic continues his run-away lead at the latest ATP world rankings released Monday while Germany's Alexander Zverev slips two places to seventh. Serbia's Djokovic has collected 12,415 points atop the rankings, keeping a large margin over second placed Rafael Nadal on 7,945 and Swiss Roger Federer on 7,460 as the top three remain unchanged.
* Australia's Ashleigh Barty retained her slim lead over Japan's Naomi Osaka in the women's world tennis rankings released by the WTA on Monday. Barty has 6,605 points, closely followed by Osaka on 6,228 and Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic with 6,055.
