Federer and Nadal return to ATP Player Council

The political rumblings in men's tennis took another twist on Thursday when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were elected on to the ATP Player Council along with Austrian Juergen Melzer.

The news followed the resignations of Robin Haase, Jamie Murray and Sergiy Stakhovsky before Wimbledon following a seven-hour meeting to thrash out a range of issues including a replacement for former player representative Justin Gimelstob.

* Mexico City signed a deal on Thursday (Aug 8) with the International Motoring Federation (FIA) to continue hosting a Formula One race through 2022, after months of uncertainty about the future of the Mexican Grand Prix.

* Southampton midfielder Nathan Redmond has signed a new four-year contract which will keep him at the south coast club until 2023, the Premier League side said on Thursday (Aug 8). Redmond played all 38 league games during the last campaign and was named the club's player of the season by both the players and the fans.

* Arsenal have bolstered their defence with the signing of 22-year-old Scotland international left back Kieran Tierney from Celtic on a long-term deal, the clubs confirmed on Thursday.

* Tottenham have confirmed that they have signed Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon to a five-year deal.

* Watford have signed Senegal international winger Ismaila Sarr from French club Rennes on a five-year contract for a club record fee, the Premier League side said on Thursday. Watford did not disclose the transfer fee but French media reported it was in the region of 32 million pounds, eclipsing the 18.5 million pounds they paid for forward Andre Gray in 2017.

* Former England striker Andy Carroll has rejoined his boyhood club Newcastle United, eight and a half years after leaving them to join Liverpool in a then British record transfer. The injury-plagued 30-year-old was a free agent after being released by West Ham United at the end of last season.

* Tottenham Hotspur signed Argentina midfielder Giovani Lo Celso from Spanish side Real Betis on a season-long loan late on deadline day, the Premier League club said on Thursday. Lo Celso, who was on loan from Paris St Germain at Betis last season before the La Liga club made his move permanent in April, scored 16 goals in all competitions and claimed six assists.

* Arsenal have signed Brazilian centre back David Luiz from London rivals Chelsea, the Premier League clubs said on Thursday. The details were not disclosed but British media reported the transfer fee was approximately eight million pounds ($9.7 million) and the 32-year-old had signed a two-year contract.

* New Zealander Brendon Hartley will join a cast of other ex-Formula One drivers in the all-electric Formula E championship after signing with the Geox Dragon team for season six starting in November.

* Brazil's Gabriel Jesus has been handed a two-month international ban and fined US$30,000 (24,738 pounds) for his behaviour following his dismissal in the Copa America final last month, South American soccer governing body CONMEBOL has said.
