Mai Duc Chung’s side dominated from the outset, needing only seven minutes to take a three-goal lead with a brace from striker Huynh Nhu (3’, 7’) and an own goal by Sen Sreyneat (4’).

Cambodia, who are attending the regional tournament for the second time, clearly showed a lack of experience and almost made no reply to Vietnam’s stormy offence.

Vietnamese women continued to demonstrate their superior level by scoring for additional goals within just five minutes thanks to Pham Hai Yen (14’, 16’) and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy (17’, 19’).

Bich Thuy wrapped up a nightmare first half for Cambodia by making it 8-0 with an eye-catching header in the 24th minute.

After the break, Mai Duc Chung’s troops proactively slowed down their pace, but still managed to score two more goals in the last ten minutes, with Hai Yen completing her hat-trick (84’) and Bich Thuy completing a poker (89’).

The resounding 10-0 victory has put Vietnam on top of Group B, above Myanmar who demolished Indonesia 7-0 earlier on the same day.

Next up for Mai Duc Chung’s troops will be a clash with Indonesia on Sunday (August 18).

In Group A, the Philippines temporarily take the top spot following their 3-0 victory over Malaysia. Meanwhile, Timor Leste beat Singapore 2-1 to claim second place.

The 2019 AFF Women’s Championship is taking place in Chonburi, Thailand from August 15 to 27 with the participation of nine Southeast Asian teams. Two-times champions Vietnam have been drawn in Group B, together with Myanmar, Cambodia and Indonesia.

The participants are playing in a round robin format, with the top two finishers from each group qualifying for the semifinals.
