Atletico off to winning start over Getafe as both sides see red

Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata scored a goal and then missed a penalty as his side began their La Liga campaign with an eventful and nervy 1-0 win at home to Getafe on Sunday which saw both teams reduced to 10 men.

* Former England, Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, one of the most decorated players in English domestic football, announced his retirement from the game on Sunday, bringing an end to a colourful 20-year career.

* Bayern Munich on Sunday signed midfielder Michael Cuisance from Borussia Moenchengladbach on a five-year deal to 2024, the German champions said.

* Belgian rider Laurens De Plus clinched overall victory in the BinckBank Tour on Sunday (Aug 18) when he was part of a small breakaway late in the seventh and final stage. It was the 23-year-old Jumbo-Visma rider's first World Tour victory.

* Belgium's Thomas Pieters ended his three-year wait for a fourth European Tour title with a one-shot win at the Czech Masters on Sunday (Aug 18), on the same Prague course where he won his first trophy in 2015.

* Mario Balotelli will return to Italy with home town team Brescia after it was confirmed on Sunday (Aug 18) he has signed for the newly-promoted club. The Italian forward has penned a "multi-year contract" and will be officially presented on Monday, the northern team confirmed on their website.

* There will be no defending champion at next week's Tour Championship after Tiger Woods failed to qualify for the season-ending event. In order to qualify, Woods needed to place about sixth at the BMW Championship on Sunday, but was destined to finish much further back after a final-round of even-par 72 at Medinah in suburban Chicago. He finished at seven-under 281, tied in a provisional 38th place with the leaders still to complete their rounds.

* Justin Thomas captured his 10th career US PGA title on Sunday (Aug 18), holding off fellow American Patrick Cantlay down the back nine to win the BMW Championship in record-smashing fashion.

* Rennes came from behind to stun lacklustre Paris St Germain with a deserved 2-1 victory at Roazhon Park in France's Ligue 1 on Sunday. PSG coach Thomas Tuchel left Neymar out of his squad for the second consecutive week amid uncertainty over the forward's future.
