Ajax, Bruges, Slavia make Champions League group stage

Ajax Amsterdam beat Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus 2-0 on Wednesday following a scoreless draw last week to storm into the Champions League group stage. They will be joined by Club Bruges, who ousted Austrian side LASK Linz 3-1 on aggregate, and Slavia Prague, who claimed a second 1-0 victory over CFR Cluj of Romania to win the two-legged tie 2-0.

* Manchester City will start their defence of the English League Cup with a third-round trip to second-tier side Preston next month, while Wednesday's (Aug 28) draw also pitted Liverpool against MK Dons.

* Spain's Angel Madrazo claimed an improbable breakaway victory on stage five of the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday, while Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez rode into the leader's red jersey after finishing fourth.

* Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez arrived in Milan on Wednesday (Aug 28) ahead of a reported one-year loan move to Inter, according to reports. The 30-year-old was photographed waving to fans at the airport and was whisked away for a medical before signing a contract later in the day, Sky Sports Italia and Gazzetta Dello Sport reported.

* Alex Iwobi's first Everton goal helped seal a 4-2 win at third-tier side Lincoln in the League Cup second round on Wednesday (Aug 28) as the top-flight club survived a scare, while Burnley were dumped out by Sunderland.
