Defending champion Osaka falls to Bencic at US Open

Naomi Osaka was upset 7-5 6-4 by Belinda Bencic at the US Open on Monday as the Japanese lost her grip on both her title and number one status while the Swiss reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows for the second time.

Next up for Bencic is a meeting with Croatia’s 23rd seed Donna Vekic, who beat Germany’s Julia Goerges 6-7(5) 7-5 6-3 on Louis Armstrong Stadium court earlier on Monday.

* Belgium's Elise Mertens put American wildcard Kristie Ahn’s US Open run to an abrupt end on Monday, defeating her soundly 6-1 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

* Argentina's Diego Schwartzman dispatched a misfiring Alexander Zverev 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-3 to reach the US Open quarter-finals on Monday after heaping more Grand Slam misery on the sixth-seeded German.

* Colombian forward Radamel Falcao signed for Turkey's Galatasaray from Monaco in a three-year free transfer deal, the Turkish side said late on Monday, adding that the striker would be paid 5 million euros each season.

* Bolton Wanderers signed nine players on Monday, the League One transfer deadline day, five days after the club was saved from liquidation.

* Veteran defender Martin Skrtel, signed by Atalanta to boost their defence as they make their Champions League debut this season, has left the club after only 24 days, the Serie A side said on Monday. The 34-year-old Slovakia international, whose career has included nine seasons at Liverpool, did not play a match for the club which he joined as a free agent on Aug. 9.

* Liverpool striker Bobby Duncan has moved to Fiorentina in a permanent transfer on the final day of the European transfer window, the European champions said on Monday.

* AS Roma ended a busy transfer window by signing Nikola Kalinic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on loan on Monday while Inter Milan offloaded former captain Mauro Icardi to Paris St. Germain after a prolific but turbulent six years at the club.

* Russian Daniil Medvedev, who has embraced his role as a villain at this year's US Open, will face Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, while Serena Williams and Roger Federer also return to the court.

* Matteo Berrettini of Italy advanced to his first Grand Slam quarter-final by beating Russia's Andrey Rublev 6-1 6-4 7-6(6) at the US Open on Monday.

* AC Milan have signed Croatia forward Ante Rebic on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt with Portugal's Andre Silva moving in the other direction, the Serie A club said on Monday.

* Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo signed for Turkey's Fenerbahce from Olympique de Marseille in a four-year deal worth six million euros, the Turkish side said on Monday.

* Giro d'Italia champion Richard Carapaz is joining Team Ineos on a three-year deal starting next season, the British outfit said on Monday.

* Barcelona winger Rafinha Alcantara extended his contract by a year then joined Celta Vigo on loan on Monday, the Spanish champions said in a statement. The Brazilian's deal was set to expire at the end of the season so the Catalans renewed it to stop him leaving for free next year.

* AS Roma have sent forward Patrik Schick on a one-season loan to RB Leipzig for a transfer fee of up to 4 million euros, the Serie A club said on Monday. RB Leipzig can make the move of the 23-year-old permanent for 28 million euros. That can rise to 29 million if the German club qualifies for next season's Champions League.

* Juventus defender Mattia De Sciglio will be out of action for at least ten days after picking up a muscle injury in his left thigh in Saturday's 4-3 league win over Napoli, the Serie A champions said on Monday.

* Midfielder Paul Pogba was replaced by Matteo Guendouzi in the France squad to face Albania and Andorra in Euro 2020 Group H qualifiers after picking up an ankle injury, the French federation said on Monday. The Manchester United player's absence earns Arsenal's Guendouzi, 20, his first call-up by coach Didier Deschamps.

* Justin Kluivert was named as a replacement for the injured Steven Bergwijn in the Netherlands squad on Monday, the Dutch football association said. PSV Eindhoven winger Bergwijn aggravated a thigh injury during Sunday's 3-1 win at RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch league and joined Stefan de Vrij on the list of withdrawals.

* Two-time grand tour champion Nairo Quintana is joining Arkea-Samsic on a three-year deal starting from 2020, the French outfit said on Monday. The 29-year-old Colombian, who won the Giro d'Italia in 2014 and the Vuelta in 2016, also finished runner-up on the Tour de France twice.

* Real Madrid have signed Paris Saint Germain's French international goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on loan until the end of the current season as part of the deal which sees Madrid's Costa Rican international Keylor Navas move in the other direction.

* World football governing body FIFA announced eight Best FIFA Football Awards finalists on Tuesday, with Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo nominated among the final three for the Best FIFA Men's Player. He was joined on the podium by long-term rival Lionel Messi and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

* Sevilla have confirmed the signing of Mexican international striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez from English Premier League side West Ham United. The 31-year-old has agreed a three-year contract until the end of June 2022 and cost around nine million euros.

* Top-ranked defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia pulled out of the US Open with a shoulder injury while trailing behind at 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 against Swiss Stan Wawrinka in the fourth round on Sunday.
