Vintage Di Maria helps PSG overwhelm Real Madrid

Angel Di Maria produced a vintage performance with two goals to help Paris St Germain claim a 3-0 home win over Real Madrid in their Champions League Group A opening game on Wednesday.

In the absence of the formidable trio of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani, Di Maria provided two first-half goals as PSG suffocated Real throughout and Thomas Meunier added a third in stoppage time. Zinedine Zidane’s Real, who eliminated PSG in the last 16 in 2017-18 and were also missing key players at the Parc des Princes, failed to muster a shot on target and suffered their first defeat of the season.

* Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski scored a landmark 200th goal for the club as they kicked off their Champions League campaign by easing to a 3-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday in a one-sided Group B encounter.

* Dinamo Zagreb made a perfect start to their Champions League Group C campaign when a majestic performance gave the Croatian side a 4-0 home win over Italian rivals Atalanta on Wednesday. Midfielder Marin Leovac fired Dinamo ahead in the 10th minute before a Mislav Orsic hat-trick sent Atalanta reeling on their debut in Europe's premier club competition.

* Atletico Madrid produced a typically spirited comeback from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Juventus in a thrilling finale to Wednesday's blockbuster Group D opener. Mexico midfielder Hector Herrera levelled in the 90th minute with a thumping header from a corner, after defender Stefan Savic had pulled a goal back for the Spaniards in the 70th with a header from close range.

* Manchester City put aside their recent Premier League setback, delivering a comfortable performance in a 3-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League Group C on Wednesday.

* Geraint Thomas will ride in both the individual time trial and road race at next week's UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire, British Cycling said on Wednesday. Welshman Thomas, the 2018 Tour de France winner, had targeted the time trial as a late-season goal after finishing runner-up at this year's Tour to Ineos team mate Egan Bernal.

* Arsenal manager Unai Emery has decided to rest playmaker Mesut Ozil and centre back Sokratis Papastathopoulos for Thursday's Europa League group stage opener at Eintracht Frankfurt. Ozil made his first appearance of the season in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Watford, playing 71 minutes, but Emery said the German midfielder would be rested ahead of the weekend's Premier League game against Aston Villa.

* Club Brugge and Galatasaray played out a goalless stalemate in their opening Champions League Group A game at the Jan Breydelstadion on Wednesday.

* Olympiakos Piraeus battled back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 home draw with last year's runners-up Tottenham Hotspur in their Champions League Group B opener on Wednesday. The hosts were stunned as Tottenham struck twice in four minutes midway through the opening half, first with Harry Kane's penalty and then a stunner by Lucas Moura. Daniel Podence halved the deficit shortly before halftime and Olympiakos were level after 54 minutes when Mathieu Valbuena beat fellow Frenchman Hugo Lloris from the penalty spot.

* Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has signed a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until at least June 2024, the Premier League club said on Wednesday. The 25-year-old Sweden international joined United in 2017 and has made 74 appearances so far. United have an option to extend the deal by a further year.

* Manchester United will be without Daniel James for Thursday's Europa League group stage opener after the winger suffered an injury in the weekend Premier League win over Leicester City, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Wednesday. With three league goals this season, Welshman James is United's leading scorer alongside Marcus Rashford but the 21-year-old has joined team mates Paul Pogba (ankle), Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw (both thigh) on the treatment table.

* The French League Cup will not be held as of next season and until further notice, the French professional football league (LFP) said on Wednesday. The LFP had failed to secure a broadcaster for the 2020-2024 period. The competition was created in 1995 and has been won a record eight times by Paris St Germain.

* Barcelona defender Jordi Alba injured his hamstring in the 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, his team said in a statement on Wednesday, with Spanish media reporting that the Spain international will be out for around two weeks. The left back was forced off in the 40th minute of Tuesday's Group F game and replaced by Sergi Roberto.

* The Moroccan football team will face Libya and Gabon in friendly matches on October 11 and 15, the Moroccan Football Federation announced on Wednesday.

* Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez and Galatasaray striker Radamel Falcao were Wednesday named in a provisional Colombia squad for international friendlies next month.
