Real top La Liga after derby draw at Atletico

Real Madrid earned a 0-0 draw at neighbours Atletico Madrid in a tight derby to stay top of La Liga on Saturday, continuing their recovery after a disappointing start to the season.

Real Madrid are top with 15 points from seven matches and Atletico stayed third with one point less. Real Sociedad, who are fifth, could displace Real at the top with a win over Sevilla on Sunday.

* Jamaican Tajay Gayle upset favourite Juan Miguel Echevarria of Cuba to win gold in the long jump at the world athletics championships on Saturday with the biggest leap of the season. The 23-year-old sped down the runway at high speed, leaping into the air to claim a distance of 8.69 metres on his fourth attempt, recording a personal best and beating his Cuban rival's 8.65m season best.

* Sifan Hassan produced a stunning final lap to win the women's 10,000 metres at the world athletics championships on Saturday, an event she only began running this season. The Dutchwoman, running the distance for the second time, overtook Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey just before the bell and powered away over the last lap to win in a season's best time of 30 minutes 17.63 seconds.

* Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling were on target as champions Manchester City won 3-1 at Everton on Saturday to stay five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. After Liverpool's 1-0 win at Sheffield United, the pressure was on City not to allow Juergen Klopp's side to open up an eight-point lead so early in the campaign. Liverpool lead on 21 points with City on 16. Everton are in 15th place on seven points but their manager Marco Silva saw signs of progress.

* Borussia Dortmund came from a goal down but had to settle for a 2-2 draw against visiting Werder Bremen on Saturday to drop further down the standings, having won only one of their last four Bundesliga games. The Ruhr valley club are now in seventh place on 11 points, three behind Bayern Munich who went top of the table after beating Paderborn 3-2.

* Alexis Sanchez scored and was sent off in his first start for Inter Milan as the Serie A leaders maintained their perfect record with a 3-1 win at Sampdoria on Saturday. The victory restored Inter’s two-point lead over Juventus at the top of the table ahead of a meeting between the sides at San Siro next Sunday, while Sampdoria are rooted to the bottom of the table after taking three points from the opening six rounds.

* DeAnna Price won the women's hammer at the world athletics championships on Saturday to become the first US athlete to claim the title. Price, who led qualifying with 73.77 metres, threw 77.54 metres with her third attempt as she took advantage of the absence of four-times world champion Anita Wlodarczyk who was sidelined with injury.

* Crystal Palace's Luka Milivojevic and Andros Townsend struck either side of halftime for a deserved 2-0 home win over Norwich City in an entertaining Premier League clash on Saturday.

* Second-half goals from Jay Rodriguez and Chris Wood helped Burnley come from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

* Second-half goals from Jorginho with a penalty and Willian's deflected shot earned Frank Lampard's Chelsea a 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, their first home Premier League win of the season.

* American Christian Coleman scorched to the 100 metres world championship gold medal on Saturday but the crowning of the world's fastest man could generate no more buzz than the air conditioning in a half-empty Khalifa Stadium. Coleman, runner-up to Justin Gatlin two years ago in London, did his part to send a jolt of excitement through a thin audience by turning the tables on his team mate in a season's best 9.76 seconds, making him the sixth fastest man of all-time.

* West Ham United's Aaron Creswell scored a late goal to extend their unbeaten Premier League run to six games with a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

* Harry Kane's eighth goal in six Premier League games against Southampton steered 10-man Tottenham Hotspur to an unlikely 2-1 victory after errors from his team mates on Saturday.

* Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Watford 2-0 to claim their first win of the Premier League season thanks to a first-half strike by Matt Doherty and an own goal from Daryl Janmaat at Molineux on Saturday.

* Barcelona ended a string of bad results away from home with a 2-0 win at Getafe on Saturday in La Liga. Strikes by Luis Suarez and Junior Firpo either side of halftime gave the Spanish champions their first win of the season on the road, although they finished with 10 men after Clement Lenglet's dismissal.

* Cristiano Ronaldo helped Juventus continue their unbeaten start to the Serie A season with a comfortable 2-0 home victory over struggling SPAL on Saturday.

* Kylian Mbappe's return boosted Paris St Germain as the France striker set up Neymar for a soft goal in a 1-0 victory at Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Mbappe, back as a substitute after a lengthy injury, burst down the right flank in the 70th minute and Neymar just had to tap in as PSG reclaimed the league lead with 18 points from eight games.

* Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko shocked second-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the women's singles first round, while China's Zheng Saisai made a strong comeback to eliminate Monica Puig as the China Open commenced main draw action in Beijing on Saturday.

* Charles Leclerc became the first Ferrari driver since Michael Schumacher to take four pole positions in a row on Saturday in a Russian Grand Prix qualifying session that bridged the generations. Formula One leader Lewis Hamilton joined the Monegasque, who was three years old when Schumacher racked up four successive poles in 2000, on the front row with Mercedes unable to match Ferrari’s pace but on a different tyre strategy.
