* Stoke City are set to appoint Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill as their head coach, Sky Sports reported on Thursday. Stoke, who are bottom of the English Championship, sacked Nathan Jones last week and the next manager will be their fifth in two years since relegation from the Premier League.
* Tiger Woods selected himself as one of his four captain's picks to play for the United States in the next month's Presidents Cup against the International team. The 15-times major champion also named Tony Finau, Patrick Reed and Gary Woodland for the biennial tournament which pits the United States against a team representing the rest of the world minus Europe.
* An 82-year-old man on Thursday became the first British cyclist to register one million miles on his bike with a five-mile ride to a cafe. Russ Mantle, a retired civil servant, has recorded his mileage since he got his first bike in 1952.
* The all-female W Series which made its debut this year will turn a profit in season three, chief executive Catherine Bond Muir said on Thursday. She added that the ultimate aim is to stretch the championship to 12 or 14 races from the initial six that featured in 2019.
* Everton midfielder Andre Gomes could make a return this season after undergoing successful ankle surgery following his horrific injury last weekend, manager Marco Silva said on Thursday. The Portugal international fractured and dislocated his right ankle in the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Sunday after landing off balance at speed following a tackle from Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min.
* Southampton have a fully fit squad to choose from when they play Everton in Saturday's Premier League match with both winger Moussa Djenepo and defender Cedric Soares back from injuries, manager Ralph Hasenhuettl said on Thursday.
* Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has undergone surgery on his dislocated elbow after tests revealed it was "unstable", the Premier League club said on Thursday. Lloris picked up the injury during Spurs' 3-0 league defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion last month when he fell awkwardly into his goal as he tried to prevent Neal Maupay scoring after parrying the ball into the path of the striker.
* If Novak Djokovic is to claim the year-end number ranking for a record-equalling sixth time he will have to do it the hard way at the ATP Finals next week in London. The Serb was knocked off top spot by Rafael Nadal on Monday despite winning the Paris Masters last week and will need a strong finish alongside the River Thames to snatch it back.
* In a very similar manner to their first match-up in Group K of Europa League from two weeks ago, the Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Slovan Bratislava 1-0 on Thursday to fortify their second place in the rankings. Braga leads the rankings with 10 points, Wolverhampton trails by one, Bratislava is in third place with 4 points.
