Vietnam wins five more golds to retain second place

The arnis, fencing, wushu and weightlifting teams grabbed five gold medals on December 3 afternoon to increase the number of titles that Vietnamese athletes have secured in the Philippines to 22.

Do Duc Tri won the men’s anyo traditional open weapon category with 9.72 points, becoming Vietnam’s fourth SEA Games arnis champion, following the previous triumphs by Nguyen Thi Cam Nhi, Dao Thi Hong Nhung and Vu Thi Thanh Binh on December 1.

Inspired by Pham Quoc Khanh’s success in the morning, Vietnamese wushu artists performed exceptionally and brought home two additional golds thanks to Nguyen Thi Trang (women’s sanda 65kg) and Bui Truong Giang (men’s sanda 60kg).

Pham Thi Hong Thanh won the fourth gold medal for Vietnamese weightlifting in this year’s SEA Games with a total lift of 214kg in the women’s -64kg category.

Fencer Vu Thanh An, the flag bearer of the Vietnamese sports delegation, clinched the first gold for the fencing team and the seventh of the day for the country by defeating his Philippine rival Jhester Concepcion Christian 15-13 in the men’s sabre final.

Together with Do Duc Tri’s gold, the arnis team also managed to win two silvers thanks to Ngo Van Huynh and Trieu Thi Hoai in the men’s and women’s anyo non-traditional open weapon events, respectively.

Vietnamese chess star Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son was unexpectedly held by Yeoh Li Tian in the last round of the men’s rapid chess category, thus settling for second place overall and losing the title to the Malaysian master.

Dinh Xuan Hoang missed out on the fourth gold medal for Vietnamese weightlifting in this year’s SEA Games after failing to take the top honour in the men’s 67kg category. Hoang only managed the second best total lift of 308kg (135kg in snatch and 173kg in clean & jerk), 7kg fewer than the total lift of Deni from Indonesia.

Wushu artist Nguyen Thi Chinh added another silver to Vietnam’s tally in the women’s sanda 48kg discipline.

Vietnamese athletes also won seven more bronze medals this afternoon in chess (1), arnis (1), wushu (3), gymnastics (1) and fencing (1).

As of 5pm today, Vietnam retained their second place in the medal standings with 22 golds, 26 silvers and 24 bronzes, only behind the Philippines with 47 golds.
