NDO – Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang brought home the first gold medal on Wednesday (December 4) for Vietnam at the ongoing 30th SEA Games after finishing first in the men’s 400m freestyle event with a time of 3:49.08, which was also a new SEA Games record.

After the first 200 metres of the final, Huy Hoang was drastically chased by his Malaysian rival Welson Sim. Entering the last 100 metres, the gap between the two competitors was just 0.39 seconds. However, the Quang Binh-born swimmer did not let Sim cruise ahead as he became the first to complete the race.

Earlier, Huy Hoang had also been the fastest in the preliminary round clocking a time of 55.21 seconds.
