SEA Games Day 4: Gymnast Dinh Phuong Thanh scoops two gold medals on bars

Gymnast Dinh Phuong Thanh won the last two gold medals for Vietnam on the fourth official day of the 30th SEA Games (December 4), as he took top honour in both the men’s horizontal bar and parallel bars.

Thanh was the most impressive performer on parallel bars earning the highest score of 14.800, 0.2 points clear of the Philippine silver medalist, Carlos Yulo. The bronze medal was claimed by another Vietnamese athlete, Le Thanh Tung, with 14.233 points.

Moving onto the horizontal bar event, Thanh continued to impress the judges with an eye-catching performance and secured the third title for Vietnamese swimming in the Philippines with 13.767 points, 0.1 and 0.2 points above the silver and bronze medal winners, respectively.

It was the fourth gold medal for Vietnam on Wednesday, following the previous triumphs by swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang in the men’s 400m freestyle and swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien in the women’s 200m individual medley.

The swimming team added two silvers to Vietnam’s 2019 SEA Games tally thanks to Le Nguyen Paul in the men’s 100m backstroke and trio Hoang Quy Phuoc, Nguyen Huu Kim Son and Ngo Dinh Chuyen in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

In addition, the Vietnamese athletes pocketed three more bronze medals, including one in fencing (women’s individual epee), one in gymnastics (women’s floor exercise) and one in judo (women’s kata).

By the end of December 4, the Vietnamese sports delegation continued to stand second in the 2019 SEA Games medal table with 27 golds, 32 silvers and 34 bronzes, 29 golds behind the Philippines and six clear of third-placed Malaysia.
