Vietnam U23s vs Jordan U23s: Park Hang-seo’s troops look towards first win

After the goalless draw against the United Arab Emirates, tonight’s match against Jordan will be the chance for Park Hang-seo’s Vietnamese side to secure their first win and widely open the door to the knockout phase of the ongoing 2020 AFC U23 Championship.

On the first matchday of the group stage, Jordan narrowly defeated the DPR Korea 2-1 to temporarily take top spot in Group D with three points. However, regional experts have assessed that Jordan U23s are not stronger than the UAE, who played out an opening 0-0 tie with Vietnam a few days ago. Inspired with a point against the toughest group rivals, the Golden Stars are now actively preparing for the important Jordan clash tonight.

In their opening match, Jordan comfortably broke through the DPR Korea’s defence by using speed and tactical combinations, but confronting Vietnam, the West Asian team will hardly repeat the feat as Vietnam’s back line is considered much more organised. The return of defensive pillar Tran Dinh Trong from injury is a positive signal for Park Hang-seo. The Republic of Korea tactician will also welcome back Ho Tan Tai from suspension for the clash against Jordan. In the Vietnam U23 squad, Park only has Tan Tai as a true right-back. The use of Viet Anh in the UAE game was just a situational solution, and it did not work properly.

In tonight’s match with Jordan, it is possible that Vietnam U23s will play solidly and slowly in the opening minutes and wait for Jordan’s strategic holes to organise fast counterattacks to finish off the opponents, rather than hastily deploying attacks. Given the fact that players from Jordan and West Asia are higher rated regarding stature and fitness, Park’s troops will possibly obstruct themselves if they choose a direct attacking playstyle.

In the 2016 tournament, Vietnam U23s once conceded defeat against Jordan in the group stage. However, at the current moment, under the leadership of Park and with the presence of a series of national team players in the squad, the power and status of Vietnam U23s is quite different. Domestic and regional experts have assessed that with their abundant experience and wise playstyle, the Golden Stars will achieve a positive result against Jordan, specifically a victory, thus widely opening the door to the quarterfinals.
