Atletico edge Liverpool with vintage defensive display

Champions League holders Liverpool will need to summon another famous European comeback at Anfield next month after they were beaten 1-0 away to Atletico Madrid in their last-16 first leg on Tuesday.

Spain midfielder Saul Niguez struck the only goal of the game in the fourth minute by bundling into the net from close range following a corner, their traditional weapon of choice in recent years.

* Borussia Dortmund teenager Erling Haaland scored twice in eight minutes to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over Paris St Germain in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Tuesday.

* Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min will have surgery this week after fracturing his right arm in the weekend's win over Aston Villa and is expected to be out for a "number of weeks", the Premier League club said on Tuesday (Feb 18).

* FIFA will hold the next meeting of its decision making Council by video-conference from its Zurich headquarters rather than in Asuncion as originally planned, the global soccer body said on Tuesday.

* Borussia Dortmund have made midfielder Emre Can's loan move from Juventus permanent, agreeing on a contract to 2024, the German club said on Tuesday. Dortmund had signed the 26-year-old from the Italian champions in January on loan until June with the club paying one million euros (830,705 pounds) for the deal.

* Sofia Kenin lost her first WTA match since winning the Australian Open earlier this month as she went down 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-3 to Elena Rybakina on Tuesday (Feb 18) at the Dubai Championships.
