Vietnam off to perfect start at Junior Davis Cup, Junior Fed Cup Asia Oceania

Vietnamese tennis players got off to a flying start to the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup Asia Oceania Pre-qualifying 2020 in Jakarta, Indonesia, as they comfortably toppled their opponents on matchday one (February 24) to take the lead temporarily in both categories.

Vietnam’s Junior Davis Cup team is made up of Pham Hoang Hieu, Truong Vinh Hien and Nguyen Quang Vinh, who is the defending champion of the Asian Tennis Federation U14 & Under Junior Series Da Nang Cup 2019 – Grade A.

In their Group C opener on Monday, young Vietnamese players won all the three matches against their Nepalese rivals, with Quang Vinh demolishing Nischal Kayastha 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles match; Hoang Hieu beating Nihal Jung Bahadur Thapa 6-0, 6-1 in the second; and duo Quang Vinh / Vinh Hien outplaying Prasidha Moktan / Nihal Jung Bahadur Thapa 6-0, 6-1 in the doubles clash.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Junior Fed Cup team, including Sophia Huynh Tran Ngoc Nhi, Ho Thi Truc Tam and Nguyen Minh Thuy Hang, also performed impressively defeating the Maldives with a score of 3-0 in their Group B opener.

Truc Tam and Ngoc Nhi earned Vietnam two singles victories against Sarah Ahmed Akram (6-1, 6-1) and Aishath Tara Naeem (6-0, 6-0) before the two Vietnamese stars paired up to beat Sarah Ahmed Akram / Zoya Zubun Saleem 6-1, 6-0 for the doubles triumph.

Today, Vietnam will play Guam in the Junior Davis Cup, while taking on Nepal in the Junior Fed Cup event.

The pre-qualifying round is played on a round robin format with the participation of 11 men’s team (Junior Davis) and seven women’s squads (Junior Fed Cup).

The three best teams of each tournament will book their places in the qualifying round in Kuching, Malaysia on March 30-April 4 for the female players and April 5-10 for male players.
