UEFA president admits that current season may not finish

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said that the current season could be “lost” if it is unable to re-start by the end of June, although he did not rule out extending it into the next season.

* A player from A-League side Newcastle Jets on Saturday (Mar 28) became Australia's first professional footballer to test positive for coronavirus. The man was not named but reports said he was involved in the team's Monday night 2-1 home win over Melbourne City behind closed doors - the last game before the season was suspended due to the pandemic.

* Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka, the poster girl of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, took to social media on Saturday to show her support for the decision by the Japanese government and International Olympic Committee to postpone the Games until next year.

* Four Russian athletes, including two former Olympic champions, have been charged with doping based on evidence from the bombshell McLaren report, the Athletics Integrity Unit (IAU) said March 28. Andrey Silnov, the 2008 Olympic high jump champion, and 2012 Olympic 400m hurdle champion Natalia Antyukh will have to face a decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

* USA Basketball is weighing alternative roster options in the event of a potential conflict between the delayed Tokyo Olympics and the NBA season. If the postponed Games are moved from a July 2020 start to March or April of 2021, NBA players would not be eligible to participate. The NBA regular season typically ends in mid-April, when the playoffs begin.

* England women's captain Sarah Hunter has said she is willing to take a pay cut to ensure staff at the country's governing body do not lose their jobs due to the coronavirus crisis. England's Rugby Football Union (RFU) faces losses of up to £50 million over the next year-and-a-half with global sport coming to a virtual standstill due to the pandemic.

* West Ham have eight players in self-isolation after showing mild symptoms of the coronavirus, according to the club's vice-chairwoman Karren Brady. The Hammers are the latest Premier League club to be hit by the pandemic.

* Major League Baseball and its players union have reached a deal on business issues ahead of a likely shortened 2020 season in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The MLB Players Association and team owners agreed upon salary terms and rescheduling plans but no start date has been set for this year's campaign, which could see the playoffs stretched deep into November in an unprecedented move.
