Bundesliga plans May 15 restart after government gives green light

Germany's Bundesliga says it plans to re-start on May 15, making it the first of Europe's top soccer leagues to get under way following the novel coronavirus stoppage, after being given the green light by the government on Wednesday.

* The final part of Bulgaria's top-flight soccer season could be played from June 5 or June 12, Sports Minister Krasen Kralev said, as the Balkan country begins to ease its lockdown to kick-start an ailing economy.

* Next year's Australian Open could be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and even if the first Grand Slam of 2021 goes ahead fans from abroad will not be able to attend, Tennis Australia chief Craig Tiley said on Wednesday.

* Portugal's professional soccer league has declared the second division season to be over with 11 rounds of matches to play and promoted C.D. Nacional and Farense, it said in a statement. The league said it was "forced to decide on the definitive suspension of the LigaPro" following the government's decision that only the top-flight Primeira Liga and the Portuguese Cup could restart following the coronavirus stoppage.

* Players at Barcelona and Real Madrid started to undergo coronavirus tests on Wednesday (May 6) as La Liga clubs planned to return to restricted training ahead of the proposed resumption of the season next month.

* The transfer value of players in 10 of Europe's top leagues could plummet by up to €10 billion (US$10.8 billion) due to the economic crash caused by coronavirus, a study from accounting firm KPMG said on Wednesday (May 6). Transfer spending is expected to fall dramatically, with clubs across the continent facing huge losses as a result of football's shutdown.

* The English Premier League season could be cancelled if teams did not agree to play the remaining 92 fixtures in neutral venues amid the COVID-19 pandemic, League Managers Association (LMA) chief executive Richard Bevan said on Wednesday (May 6).

* Boxers fighting in the UK would be required to wear masks during ring walks and would be banned from using a spit bucket under proposals to allow for a resumption of the sport, it was reported on Wednesday (May 6). Boxing authorities are reportedly gearing up for a July re-start following the coronavirus shutdown.

* Italy's sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora warned on Wednesday (May 6) that it was impossible to set a date for a return to Serie A action as the country grapples with the coronavirus pandemic.

* An unidentified player at Serie A club Torino has tested positive for the coronavirus in the first round of testing ahead of the club's planned return to training.
