MotoGP sets end of July deadline for non-European races

MotoGP has set an end of July deadline to decide whether this year's coronavirus-hit championship will be confined to Europe or expand to Asia and the Americas, CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta said on Wednesday.

The only long-haul races yet to be cancelled due to the pandemic are ones in Thailand, Malaysia, the United States (Texas) and Argentina.

* LASK Linz, docked six points last week for breaking coronavirus rules, saw their bid for a second-ever Austrian league title suffer another blow on Wednesday with a stoppage-time 2-1 defeat at home to Hartberg.

* Werder Bremen's fight against relegation from the Bundesliga faltered on Wednesday after a 3-0 home defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt that leaves them mired in the drop zone.

* Diego Maradona will remain as coach of Argentine side Gimnasia y Esgrima until the end of the 2020-2021 season after extending his contract, the club said on Wednesday.

* The Premier League's restart bid received a boost on Wednesday (Jun 3) as it was revealed an unnamed person at Tottenham was the only positive test out of 1,197 in the latest round of coronavirus checks.

* Turkish club Trabzonspor have been given a one-season ban from European football after falling foul of the break-even rule known as financial fair play (FFP). UEFA said in a statement on Wednesday that Trabzonspor had failed to meet the conditions of a settlement agreement it reached with the European soccer body in 2016, when it was found to have breached the rules.

* Romania's professional league (LPF) confirmed on Wednesday that the top-flight season will restart on June 12 as the playoffs between the top six teams must finish on July 18 with every club playing eight games in less than five weeks.

* The Spanish football season will restart a day earlier than originally planned on Jun 10 with the second half of a second division match between Rayo Vallecano and Albacete that was postponed last December due to offensive chanting. A statement from the Spanish football federation said both sides had agreed to play the match from the second half without any spectators.

* Atletico Madrid's long-serving assistant coach German "Mono" Burgos has announced he is leaving the club at the end of this campaign after over eight years in order to become a head coach.

* The 2020-21 Scottish Premiership season will begin in August after the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) and Sky Sports on Wednesday agreed a framework for top-flight soccer in the country to resume amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

* Amazon will make its four Premier League matches in the remainder of the 2019-2020 season free-to-air as broadcasters prepare for the return of the English top-flight. The Premier League is set to resume behind closed doors on June 17 after being suspended since March due to the coronavirus.
