Ronaldo nets 100th international goal as Portugal down Sweden

Cristiano Ronaldo rattled home a superb first-half free kick to become only the second male player to score 100 international goals as Portugal outclassed 10-man Sweden 2-0 in their Nations League A Group 3 game on Tuesday.

* France earned a rollercoaster 4-2 home win over Croatia in an entertaining top-tier Nations League Group 3 match on Tuesday with the outcome a carbon copy of their memorable clash in the 2018 World Cup final. The French made it two wins out of two after their opening 1-0 victory at Sweden and stayed level on six points with Portugal.

Naomi Osaka's sharp serving and superior return game helped her past American Shelby Rogers 6-3 6-4 and into the semi-finals of the US Open on Tuesday as the Japanese continues her quest for a second title at Flushing Meadows.

* German fifth seed Alexander Zverev survived a stern test of nerves to reach his second Grand Slam semi-final this year with a 1-6 7-6(5) 7-6(1) 6-3 victory over Croatian Borna Coric at the US Open on Tuesday. After a slow start, Zverev raised his game as the match wore on and showed more poise in the crucial moments against the 27th seed to become the first German to reach the last four at the US Open since Boris Becker in 1995.

* Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi scored twice as the hosts eased to a 5-1 victory over Iceland and a 12th win in a row in their Nations League clash at the King Baudouin Stadium on Tuesday.

* Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was named men's Player of the Year while Chelsea forward Bethany England won the women's award, England's Professional Footballers' Association announced on Tuesday. De Bruyne, 29, scored 13 Premier League goals last season and the Belgian international also equalled the league record with 20 assists which helped him become the first Manchester City player to win the award.

* Newcastle United have signed Northern Ireland left back Jamal Lewis from Championship (second-tier) side Norwich City on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

* Justin Thomas added a further accolade to a stellar campaign when he was named the PGA of America Player of the Year on Tuesday, while Webb Simpson won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average. Thomas, who won three events during the season and finished joint runner-up in the FedExCup playoffs, edged Spaniard Jon Rahm to capture the award, which is based on a points system, for the second time in his career.

* American upstart Jennifer Brady continued her surprising surge at the US Open with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva on Tuesday to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final. The 28th-seeded Brady, who has yet to drop a set at this year's US Open, used her massive forehand and impressive court coverage to deny Putintseva in her bid to become the first Kazakh woman to reach the final four of any major.

* All 28 Premier League matches scheduled to be played in September will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom, the league announced on Tuesday after a shareholders meeting. The new season kicks off on Saturday with eight matches on the opening weekend and the clubs agreed they will be broadcast via Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video and the BBC.

* A maximum of 300 fans will be allowed to attend two Scottish Premiership games this weekend for the Scottish government's pilot scheme for the return of spectators to stadiums, the Scottish Professional Football League said on Tuesday.

* Clubs in Spain's top two divisions will be able to make five substitutions for the entirety of the upcoming season after the national soccer federation said on Tuesday it had approved a request from the league to extend the rule change. The La Liga season starts up again on Friday.

* Ireland's Sam Bennett completed his set of Grand Tour victories when he prevailed in the 10th stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday. The Deceuninck-Quick Step rider, who already had three Giro d'Italia and two Vuelta stage wins to his name, narrowly outsprinted Australian Caleb Ewan and Slovakian Peter Sagan for his first win in cycling's biggest event.

* Inter Milan have signed Serbia defender Aleksandar Kolarov from AS Roma on a permanent deal, the Serie A club said on Tuesday. Kolarov scored 19 goals and had 20 assists in 132 games in all competitions for Roma after his arrival from Premier League club Manchester City in 2017.

* Bundesliga club Schalke 04 will distribute some of their 300 tickets for the first two home matches of the season to healthcare professionals and senior home workers to thank them for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic, the club have said. Schalke got the green light from the local health authority to allow initially up to 300 spectators for every home game inside the 62,000-capacity Auf Schalke Arena.

* Arsenal's Spanish defender Hector Bellerin has become the second-largest shareholder in Forest Green Rovers, the world's most environmentally sustainable football club, according to FIFA. Bellerin, who this year pledged to ensure 3,000 trees were planted in the Amazon rainforest for every Arsenal win, said he was excited to join Rovers' green revolution.

* European clubs are facing a cash crisis and the transfer market could shrink by 20-30% because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the head of the association which represents them said on Tuesday. Andrea Agnelli, chairman of the European Club Association, said clubs across the continent were losing revenue from broadcasters, gate receipts and sponsors due to measures to combat COVID-19.
