Thiem claims US Open title after thrilling fightback

* Jamie Vardy converted two penalties to help Leicester City get off to a winning start in the Premier League season with a 3-0 victory at promoted West Bromwich Albion on Sunday (Sep 13).

* Everton justified the pre-season optimism as Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header earned them an impressive 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League opener on Sunday (Sep 13) - the Merseyside club's first win over Spurs since 2012.

* Ferrari celebrated their 1,000th Formula One world championship race on Sunday with passion, pride and pain - and a Schumacher as Michael's son Mick drove his father's 2014 car around the team's Mugello circuit. Ferrari, the only team to have competed in every season since the first in 1950, have won more races and championships than any other.

* Petronas Yamaha's Franco Morbidelli produced a dominant display to win the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday after team mate Fabio Quartararo was forced to retire from the race at Misano. Italian Morbidelli, who started second on the grid, finished in 42 minutes, 2.272 seconds to comfortably beat Pramac Racing's Francesco Bagnaia and secure his first MotoGP win.

* Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar has tested positive for COVID-19, the club said on Sunday (Sep 12), and three players from their rivals Sporting have also been infected. Benfica confirmed in their medical bulletin that Belgian Svilar, 21, will miss the Champions League third round qualifier away to PAOK in Greece on Tuesday.

* Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic captured his maiden ATP title by beating German Yannick Hanfmann 6-4 6-4 in the Generali Open final in Kitzbuehel, Austria on Sunday.

* Tadej Pogacar beat fellow Slovenian and overall leader Primoz Roglic to win the 15th stage of the Tour de France as defending champion Egan Bernal all but abandoned his crown after a brutal failure on Sunday (Sep 13).

* Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo has signed a new three-year contract, the Premier League club said on Sunday. The Portuguese joined Wolves in May 2017 and has transformed their fortunes, taking them out of the second-tier Championship and turning them into a Premier League force.

* Lewis Hamilton celebrated his 90th Formula One win, one short of Ferrari great Michael Schumacher's all-time record, after a crazy Tuscan Grand Prix on Sunday (Sep 13) that twice had to be stopped and re-started.
