* Professional football will restart in Argentina on Oct. 30 after a seven-month hiatus caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic, the president of the Argentine Football Association said on Wednesday. The first division will begin on Oct. 30 and the second division will start a week later on Nov. 7. The third and fourth divisions and the women’s professional league will kick off on Nov. 23 and the fifth tier will restart on Dec. 6.
* A first-half double from left-winger Robson helped Coritiba to an impressive 3-1 win over Palmeiras on Wednesday and condemned the Sao Paulo side to their third consecutive league defeat.
* Scotland closed in on promotion to the top tier of the Nations League on Wednesday (Oct 14) after winning their top-of-the-table clash with the Czech Republic as the races in the other three League B groups remained extremely tight. An early Ryan Fraser goal was enough to edge the Scots past their nearest rivals and open up a four-point lead at the top of Group 2, with a single point still separating the top sides in Groups 3 and 4, and Austria and Norway neck and neck in Group 1.
* Italy extended their unbeaten run to 19 games with a 1-1 draw at home to the Netherlands on Wednesday, although they were knocked off the top of their Nations League group in the process. Italy, with six points from four games, were overtaken at the top of League A Group One by Poland who beat Bosnia 3-0 and have seven. The Dutch are third with five.

* Stand-in captain Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Belgium got back to winning ways with a 2-1 away victory over Iceland in the Nations League on Wednesday. Belgium moved to the top of the League A Group 2 standings following England's defeat at home to Denmark that dropped Gareth Southgate's side down to third.

* Crystal Palace have signed right back Nathaniel Clyne on a short-term deal, the Premier League club said on Wednesday. Clyne returns to Palace after eight years, having previously played 137 games for the London club between 2008-2012.
* Wasps' preparations for the English Premiership final suffered a setback after seven members of the club's playing staff returned positive tests for COVID-19 on Wednesday. Four players and three support staff tested positive for the coronavirus and Wasps have cancelled training for the remainder of this week as an added precautionary measure.
* Serie A champions Juventus have sent their squad into isolation after midfielder Weston McKennie tested positive for COVID-19, the Turin club said in a statement on Wednesday. However, Juventus, who made the announcement after forward Cristiano Ronaldo tested positive while with the Portugal national team, made it clear that training and matches would continue as normal for players who continue to test negative.
* New Zealand's oldest surviving test player John Reid passed away at the age of 92 in Auckland, the country's cricket board said on Wednesday. Former skipper Reid played 58 test matches for the Kiwis, scoring 3,428 runs including six centuries and bagged 85 wickets between 1949-1965.
* Frenchman Arnaud Demare's prolific Giro d'Italia continued as he claimed his fourth stage victory in this year's race after a bunch sprint at the end of Stage 11 in Rimini on Wednesday.
* Canada has pulled its team out of the world half-marathon championships in Poland this weekend over COVID-19 health and safety concerns, Athletics Canada said on Wednesday.
* Czech football icon Antonin Panenka, famous for a cheeky winning penalty in the 1976 European Championship final which made his name part of football terminology, has been discharged from hospital, one week after being taken into intensive care.
* Japanese Formula Two driver Yuki Tsunoda will test with the Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri Formula One team at Imola next month, they said on Wednesday. Tsunoda, currently third in the F2 standings, will drive a 2018 Toro Rosso car - the latest allowed for such a test - on Nov. 4 after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Italian circuit.
