Villa maintain perfect start, Bale's Spurs return eclipsed by West Ham fight back

Aston Villa preserved the Premier League’s only 100% record as Ross Barkley’s late goal earned them a 1-0 win at Leicester City on Sunday to move into second place, one point behind early leaders Everton whose perfect start ended on Saturday.

Gareth Bale’s first appearance for Tottenham Hotspur for seven years, following his loan move from Real Madrid, was eclipsed by West Ham United who scored three times late on to draw 3-3 in the London derby.

* Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu faces up to three months out with an abductor problem, manager Brendan Rodgers said, while striker Jamie Vardy may miss Thursday's Europa League meeting with Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk due to a calf injury.

* Andy Murray has suffered another injury setback and has pulled out of this week's ATP Tour event in Germany due to a lingering pelvic problem, the former world number one said, raising doubts over his participation for the remainder of the year.

* Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands unveiled plans on Monday for a joint bid to host the Women’s World Cup in 2027. A statement released by the three countries' football associations said they had already expressed their intention to bid to world football’s governing body FIFA and that they would put together a formal agreement by the end of the year.

* American Jason Kokrak fired off eight birdies in a flawless final round for his first-ever PGA Tour victory at the CJ Cup in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, clinching his maiden title on the 233rd try. The 35-year-old outclassed a crowded field of elite performers, carding an eight-under-par 64 at the Shadow Creek Golf Course, draining a 20-foot putt on 10, one of 11 putts he made from further than 10 feet away through 72 holes.

* Unbeaten Lille moved top of the Ligue 1 standings as they demolished promoted neighbours RC Lens 4-0 at home in the northern derby on Sunday. Lille have 17 points from seven games and lead second-placed Paris St Germain by two points. Earlier, Karl Toko Ekambi's double earned Lyon a 3-2 victory at Racing Strasbourg as Rudi Garcia's team jumped up to ninth on 10 points.

* Liverpool have been a dealt a huge blow with news that centre back Virgil van Dijk needs surgery on damaged knee ligaments sustained in Saturday's Merseyside derby draw against Everton. The Premier League champions confirmed on Sunday that the Dutchman, ever-present in the league for the last two seasons, would need an operation, although they did not say how long he would likely be missing.

* Spain's Adrian Otaegui produced a barnstorming closing round of nine-under-par 63 to claim a four-stroke victory at the Scottish Championship on Sunday. Otaegui, whose previous two European Tour wins came in head-to-head matchplay events, used all his experience to overpower English duo Matt Wallace and Aaron Rai for his first stroke-play title at Fairmont St Andrews.

* Ghana striker Jordan Ayew missed Crystal Palace's 1-1 draw at home to Brighton and Hove Albion after testing positive for COVID-19 on his return from international duty, Palace manager Roy Hodgson said on Sunday.

* Villarreal midfielder Dani Parejo scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 win at home to former club Valencia to take his side top of La Liga on Sunday. Unai Emery's side saw out the win to lead the standings on 11 points after six games, one ahead of second-placed Real Madrid who were beaten 1-0 at home by Cadiz on Saturday.

* Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema scored a first-half hattrick for Women's Super League leaders Arsenal in a 6-1 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, breaking Nikita Parris' record to become the competition's all-time top scorer in the process.

* Substitute Alexis Mac Allister struck late on with his first Premier League goal to secure Brighton and Hove Albion a deserved point in a 1-1 draw away at arch-rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday.

* Rins' team mate Joan Mir finished third to take a six-point lead at the top of the championship ahead of Fabio Quartararo, who started at the top of the grid but finished a disappointing 18th for Petronas Yamaha.

* Tao Geoghegan Hart claimed a fifth stage win for Ineos-Grenadiers in this year's Giro d'Italia when he won the 15th stage on Sunday, a 185-km mountain trek, as Joao Almeida's overall lead was whittled down to just 15 seconds. Briton Geoghegan Hart was the freshest man at the end of the final ascent, a punishing 14.5-km effort at an average gradient of 7.8%, to beat Dutchman Wilco Kelderman by two seconds.

* Top seed Alexander Zverev bagged his first ATP crown of the year after beating Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 6-3 to lift the bett1HULKS Indoor title in Cologne on Sunday. The German, who lost the US Open final last month and exited the French Open in the fourth round, needed only an hour and 20 minutes to get the better of the 20-year-old Canadian thanks to a dominant service game.

* Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel beat his powerful Belgian rival Wout Van Aert in a photo-finish sprint to win the Tour of Flanders 'Monument' classic on Sunday, as world champion Julian Alaphilippe crashed out of the race. Van der Poel, whose father Adri won the one-day race in 1986, launched the two-man sprint and managed to just hold off Van Aert after 241 kilometres.

* Serbia's Laslo Djere beat Italy's Marco Cecchinato 7-6(3) 7-5 on Sunday to win his second career ATP title at the Sardinia Open, the final claycourt tournament of the year. Djere, the world number 74, is the third Serbian to win an ATP title this year after world number one and Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic (four titles) and 21-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic, who captured his maiden title in Kitzbuehel.

* Egyptian grandfather Ezzeldin Bahader has been recognised as the world's oldest professional soccer player after completing a second full match just short of his 75th birthday. Bahader was awarded the title by Guinness World Records on Saturday evening after missing a penalty kick as his team, 6th October, lost 3-2 to El Ayat Sports club in the Egyptian third division.

* Irrepressible Sassuolo scored three goals in 13 minutes as they charged back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 at Bologna in their Serie A derby on Sunday, moving up to second place in the league and remaining unbeaten so far.

* Brighton & Hove Albion have signed Danny Welbeck on a free transfer with the former England striker penning a one-year deal, the Premier League club said on Sunday. Welbeck, 29, was released by Watford after the club were relegated from the top flight. He previously played for Manchester United and Arsenal in a career often blighted by injury.

* Valentino Rossi has been ruled out of next weekend's MotoGP Teruel Grand Prix and Yamaha will not enter a replacement rider for the nine-times world champion who is self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19, the team said on Sunday.

* New Zealand's Shane van Ginsbergen won his first Bathurst 1000, Australia's most iconic motor race, on Sunday in front of a small crowd around a Mount Panorama circuit that is normally teeming with hundreds of thousands of spectators.
