* Luis Alberto's first-half goal earned Lazio a 1-0 win over Sampdoria on Saturday, with a seventh win in eight league games putting Simone Inzaghi's side fourth in the Serie A standings. The result moves Lazio above Juventus into fourth on 43 points with the champions, who have played two games fewer, in action against bottom side Crotone on Monday.
* Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw away to struggling Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday after the hosts midfielder Takumi Minamino scored with their only attack of the first half and Mason Mount levelled with a penalty after the break. Chelsea are in fourth place, now a point ahead of West Ham United, who play on Sunday.
* Midfielder Amin Younes scored a superb goal and helped with another as Eintracht Frankfurt beat leaders Bayern Munich 2-1 on Saturday to stay on course for a Champions League spot. Frankfurt move up to 42 points in fourth place, level with third-placed VfL Wolfsburg. Bayern are top on 49, with second-placed RB Leipzig, on 44, in action against Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
* Visitors Borussia Dortmund crushed Schalke 04 4-0 in their Ruhr valley derby on Saturday, with two goals from Erling Haaland, to earn their first win in three league matches and a big shot of confidence in their battle for a top-four finish. Dortmund are sixth on 36 points.
* Burnley were held to a 0-0 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, despite the visitors being reduced to 10 men for an hour. Even though they failed to secure all three points, Burnley stretched their unbeaten run to four league games to sit 15th in the standings on 28 points, nine points clear of the relegation zone.
* La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid fell to their first defeat in 12 league games when they were beaten 2-0 at home to Levante on Saturday.
* A heavily depleted Real Madrid continued their pursuit of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to struggling Real Valladolid on Saturday to move within three points of their city rivals. Real remain in second but moved on to 52 points after 24 games, with Atletico leading the standings on 55 with a game in hand. Barcelona, who play at home to Cadiz on Sunday, are third on 46 points.
* Austria's Katharina Liensberger won women's slalom gold at the Alpine skiing world championships on Saturday to end Mikaela Shiffrin's bid for a record fifth successive title in the discipline. Petra Vlhova of Slovakia took the silver and American Shiffrin was the bronze medallist, according to unofficial results.
* American Rajeev Ram and Czech Republic's Barbora Krejcikova captured their second major title as a pair after defeating local wildcards Matthew Ebden and Samantha Stosur in the Australian Open mixed doubles final on Saturday. The sixth seeds dominated from start to finish and did not drop serve in the match as they cruised to a 6-1 6-4 victory in 59 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena, bringing the surprise run of the hometown pair to an end.
* The UK government has announced a multi-million pound winter survival package for women's sport which is set to boost the finances of netball, soccer, badminton and basketball. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport said netball will receive 4.2 million pounds (US$5.89 million) which will help the Netball Superleague restart its 2021 season.
* Naomi Osaka crushed Jennifer Brady 6-4 6-3 to secure her second Australian Open title on Saturday and cement her standing as the new queen of the women’s game. Osaka’s one-sided win over the 22nd-seeded American in the final at Rod Laver Arena gave the Japanese juggernaut her fourth major crown, with her career still budding at the age of 23.
