Football: Ronaldo double helps Juve cruise past Crotone to go third

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Juventus strolled to a 3-0 home win over bottom side Crotone in Serie A on Monday (Feb 22), with the victory taking the champions up to third in the standings.

* Christian Benteke's stoppage-time volley earned Crystal Palace a dramatic 2-1 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Monday, despite the visitors being second best for much of the contest.

* Sevilla's Diego Carlos and Luuk de Jong got on the scoresheet to secure a fifth La Liga win in a row as their side enjoyed a 2-0 victory at Osasuna on Monday to move above Barcelona into third place and join the title race.

* Head coach Eusebio Di Francesco has been sacked by Cagliari after a run of 16 league games without a win, the Serie A club said on Monday. A 1-0 home defeat against fellow strugglers Torino on Friday was the final straw, with the loss leaving the Sardinians languishing down in 18th in the standings having amassed 15 points, five from the safety zone, from 23 games this season.

* The 2023 Rugby World Cup in France will have increased rest periods for all teams as part of a new player welfare package announced on Monday by the Rugby World Cup Board, the World Rugby executive committee and tournament organisers. As part of the package, teams will have at least five days to prepare for all matches for the first time, as the pool phase will be extended by a week.

* Gabriele Gravina has been re-elected on Monday as president of the Italian Football Federation. The 67-year-old was up against the current president of the amateur leagues, Cosimo Sibilia, having held the top job at the FIGC since October 2018.

* Japan's Taro Daniel defeated India's Ramkumar Ramanathan on Monday in a three-set fight (6-3 6-7 6-3) to set up a second-round clash with Croatia's Marin Cilic at the Singapore Tennis Open.

* Telecom Italia is preparing to provide technological and financial support to sports streaming service DAZN Group as it bids for the rights to screen Italy's top soccer league, said three people close to the matter.

* Borussia Dortmund on Monday accepted a fine of €75,000 (US$91,260) after their players broke the German league's hygiene rules with an impromptu victory celebration on the team bus after last weekend's derby win against Schalke. The German Football League issued the fine after footage emerged of Dortmund players celebrating on the team bus on Saturday without masks and without observing social distancing rules.
