Jesus hits double as rampant Man City go 15 points clear with Wolves win

Gabriel Jesus struck twice as Manchester City beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 on Tuesday (Mar 2) to move 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League with their 21st straight win in all competitions.

City, storming towards their third league title in four years, scored three late goals to wrap up victory and move onto 65 points with 11 games left to play ahead of Manchester United on 50 points with a game in hand.

* Former Brazilian soccer star Pele was vaccinated against COVID-19 on Tuesday, the same day that a record 1,641 people were reported to have died in the South American nation after contracting the virus. Pele posted a picture of him receiving the vaccination on Instagram giving a thumbs up sign.

* New Zealand's government remains committed to hosting the next women's Rugby World Cup even if it is postponed until 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sports Minister Grant Robertson said on Wednesday.

* Jadon Sancho finished a lightning-quick counter attack for Borussia Dortmund to secure a 1-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach in the German Cup on Tuesday and book their spot in the semi-finals.

* Cristiano Ronaldo marked his 600th league appearance with his 20th Serie A goal of the season as Juventus beat Spezia 3-0 on Tuesday to move within three points of second-placed AC Milan. The win leaves Juve third with 49 points from 24 games behind Milan on 52 and leaders Inter with 56, both of whom are in action this week against Udinese and Parma respectively.

* Schalke 04 on Tuesday appointed Dimitrios Grammozis as head coach on a contract to 2022, two days after sacking Christian Gross with the club anchored at the bottom of the Bundesliga.

* Fernando Alonso is fit and 'fully operational' after jaw surgery and will be fine for Formula One's pre-season testing in Bahrain, his Alpine team boss said on Tuesday. The double world champion fractured his jaw in a collision with a car while cycling on a road near his home in Switzerland last month.

* Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson said forward Wilfried Zaha is nearing full fitness but will not be rushed back into action when they host Manchester United on Wednesday. Zaha, who has scored nine goals in 19 league games this season, has missed the last four Palace games with a hamstring injury sustained in the 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Feb. 2.

* Aston Villa will be without captain Jack Grealish for a third Premier League game in a row when they face Sheffield United on Wednesday, manager Dean Smith said. Grealish has still not recovered from a leg injury that he sustained in training last month but Smith said he was hopeful the England international will return to training later this week.

* Former Liverpool and Scotland striker Ian St John, who followed a stellar career on the pitch by becoming a hugely popular and successful TV presenter, has died aged 82 after a long illness, the Premier League champions said on Tuesday.

* Fourth-seeded Kristina Mladenovic of France survived a two-hour, 42-minute test in Tuesday’s first round to advance in the Lyon Open in France. She’ll face Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan in the next round; Gasparyan took a clean 6-4, 6-1 win over Ukraine’s Katarina Zavatska on Tuesday.

* American Madison Keys upset No. 6 seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-4, 6-1 in the first round Tuesday in Doha, Qatar. Japan’s Misaki Doi defefeated Saisai Zheng of China 6-4, 6-3 to advance to a second-round matchup with top seed and World No. 5 ranked Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
