Hanoi FC steal V.League 1 top spot with victory over HCM City

Hanoi FC rose to the top spot in the V.League 1 table after beating Ho Chi Minh City away with three straight goals on March 23 in a game that was overshadowed by a severe injury for Hanoi midfielder Do Hung Dung.

During a mid-field battle in the middle of the first half, HCM City’s Ngo Hoang Thinh produced a bad tackle causing Do Hung Dung to suffer a broken leg. The Hanoi player received first aid from medical workers right on the field before being taken to hospital, leaving the match interrupted for six minutes.

Thinh was shown a red card for his brutal input, while Hanoi FC successfully converted the resulting freekick with Do Duy Manh heading past goalkeeper Thanh Thang from close range.

After the break, the guests dominated possession and needed only two minutes to double their advantage. HCM City defender Than Thanh Tin carelessly passed the ball to Hanoi captain Nguyen Van Quyet, who punished his fatal mistake with a simple finish at the far bottom corner.

Chu Dinh Nghiem’s side comfortably produced some more threats to Thang Thang’s goal before Geovane headed home from a left-wing corner kick to seal a convincing 3-0 win for the capital team.

The third successive victory has lifted Hanoi FC to top of the table with nine points, ahead of Hai Phong FC and SHB Da Nang on goal difference.

Konan celebrates scoring the solitary goal for Nam Dinh FC.

On the same day, SHB Da Nang could not defend their reign after losing 1-2 at home to Song Lam Nghe An. Meanwhile, Nam Dinh FC tasted their second win this season after edging past newbies Topenland Binh Dinh 1-0 thanks to Konan’s second-half goal.

V.League 1 action will continue today with the remaining Round 5 clashes, including Becamex Binh Duong vs Saigon FC, Quang Ninh Coal vs Thanh Hoa FC, Ha Tinh FC vs Hai Phong FC, and Viettel FC vs Hoang Anh Gia Lai.
