Watford seal Premier League promotion with victory over Millwall

Watford secured promotion to the Premier League on Saturday with two games to spare, after a 1-0 win over Millwall in the (second-tier) Championship at Vicarage Road.

Ismaila Sarr's 11th-minute penalty proved enough as Watford guaranteed one of the two automatic promotion spots alongside Championship leaders Norwich City, who booked their top-flight spot last weekend.

* Liverpool suffered another setback in a tumultuous week as Joe Willock's 94th minute equaliser earned Newcastle a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday (Apr 24) that prevented Jurgen Klopp's men from moving into the Premier League top four.

* Timo Werner ended his goal drought in timely fashion to earn Chelsea a crucial 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the battle for a top-four finish in the Premier League on Saturday.

* A first-half goal by David McGoldrick gave Sheffield United a bittersweet 1-0 win home over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday a week after the Blades were relegated from the Premier League.

* Bayern Munich squandered their first chance to seal the Bundesliga title when they lost 2-1 at Mainz 05 on Saturday and will now have to wait for RB Leipzig's game on Sunday to see whether they have clinched their 31st German league crown.

* Kylian Mbappe scored either side of halftime but picked up a thigh injury as Paris St Germain returned to the top of Ligue 1 with a 3-1 victory over Metz at the Stade Saint-Symphorien on Saturday.

* A sloppy Real Madrid were held 0-0 at home to Real Betis on Saturday in a further blow to their hopes of retaining the La Liga title. A second goalless draw in three league games left Madrid second in the standings with 71 points, two behind leaders Atletico Madrid who can increase their lead to five points with victory at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Betis are sixth on 50.

* An overhead kick from Domenico Berardi secured a 1-0 win for Sassuolo against Sampdoria on Saturday that moved the Neroverdi within three points of seventh-placed AS Roma.

* Manchester City have reached an agreement with Brazilian side Fluminense for the transfer of highly-rated forward Kayky, the Premier League leaders said. The 17-year-old winger, who has drawn comparisons with Paris St Germain forward Neymar and was on the radar of Premier League champions Liverpool and Shakhtar Donetsk, will remain with the Brazilian Serie A outfit until their end of the current season.

* Rafael Nadal trounced compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta to reach his 12th Barcelona final where he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Greek star who stunned the great Spaniard from two sets down in this year's Australian Open. Top seed Nadal, an 11-time champion in Barcelona, eased to a 6-3, 6-2 win over world number 13 Carreno Busta in 90 minutes.

* World number one Ashleigh Barty celebrated her 25th birthday by fighting back to beat Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals of the WTA clay-court tournament in Stuttgart on Saturday. Despite losing the first set in just a over half an hour, Barty hit back to seal a 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 win over the Ukrainian fourth seed to set up a final clash against either second-seed Simona Halep or Aryna Sabalenka.

* Novak Djokovic crashed out of his own tournament after Russia's Aslan Karatsev beat him 7-5 4-6 6-4 on Saturday to reach the Serbia Open final and avenge the Australian Open semi-final defeat by the world number one.
