Newcastle stun Leicester to all but ensure safety

Callum Wilson's double helped Newcastle United to a thumping 4-2 win away to Leicester City on Friday (May 7) which all but secured their Premier League survival and left the hosts looking over their shoulders in the race for a top-four finish.

Leicester have 63 points with three games remaining, two more than Chelsea and five more than West Ham United. Newcastle climbed to 13th place with 39 points from 35 games and are 12 points clear of third-from bottom Fulham who have four games left.

* Brazil forward Neymar will extend his contract on Saturday with Paris St Germain by four years until 2026, French sports daily L'Equipe reported on Friday. PSG are also looking to extend Kylian Mbappe's deal as the 22-year-old France striker's contract expires at the end of next season.

* World number four Sofia Kenin has parted ways with her coach: her father, Alex Kenin: after a string of disappointing performances this year, the 22-year-old American announced on Friday.

* Lille edged closer to their first Ligue 1 title in 10 years as a Burak Yilmaz double inspired them to a 3-0 win in the derby of the North at 10-man RC Lens on Friday. Yilmaz struck a penalty and a stunner in the first half with Jonathan David adding another after the break to put Lille on 79 points with two games left, four ahead of champions Paris St Germain who play their game in hand at Stade Rennais on Sunday.

* Rafa Nadal was knocked out of the Madrid Open quarter-finals stage 6-4 6-4 by German Alex Zverev on Friday. Nadal, a five-time winner in the Spanish capital, was the favourite and top seed having lifted the Barcelona Open trophy last month but played below par on a sweltering spring day. Zverev will take on third seed Dominic Thiem in Saturday's semi-final after the Austrian overcame John Isner 3-6 6-3 6-4.

* Formula One is keeping a close eye on the situation in Turkey after the British government on Friday placed the country on a red list for travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sport announced last month that Turkey's Istanbul Park circuit was replacing Canada on the calendar with a grand prix on June 13.

* France international Florian Thauvin will leave Olympique de Marseille to join Tigres on a five-year deal at the end of the season, the Mexican club said on Friday. The 28-year-old forward, who won the World Cup with France in 2018 but has not played for his country since June 2019, had joined Marseille in 2013, spending some time at Newcastle United between 2015 and 2017.

* The three teams that remain involved in the breakaway Super League operation, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, face sanctions from UEFA, who have reached an agreement with the nine other clubs.

* Valtteri Bottas lapped fastest for Mercedes in first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday with Red Bull's Max Verstappen next on the timesheets and a mere 0.033 of a second slower. Seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is eight points clear of Verstappen after three races and has won in Spain for the past four years and five times in total, was third quickest.

* Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has played down his side's top-four chances and said winning their five remaining Premier League games might not be sufficient to secure a Champions League spot for next season. Liverpool stormed to the Premier League title last season but a campaign marred by injuries and poor form has left them seventh, seven points below the fourth and final Champions League place.

* Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Ryan Mason says Gareth Bale is rediscovering his best form and hopes the Welsh forward will have an important role to play in the London club's hunt for a top-four finish. Bale, 31, arrived at Tottenham on loan in September, but initially struggled with his form and fitness, making just six Premier League starts under former manager Jose Mourinho.
